A LITTLE INFORMATION FROM THE MANUFACTURER

Foz Down - Phosphate Binder

There are several important goals that must be accomplished in an aquarium to make it an enjoyable experience. One of these goals is controlling the phosphate in the water. Phosphate is produced from organic matter decomposing in your aquarium. This can be from uneaten food or animals that have perished.

Foz Down is a great way to rid your aquarium of undesirable phosphates. Phosphate causes several problems in aquariums. Phosphate causes the SPS corals to lose colour and stop growing if high enough. Phosphate is one of the primary nutrients used by algae. By keeping phosphates very low you will naturally inhibit the growth of algae’s.

There are three methods that can be used to implement a phosphate control program.

The General Method. – Assuming a tank moderately stocked with fish.

Add 1 drop per 10 gallons twice per week. If you have a severe outbreak of algae you can double the dose until you see a decline or change in the algae, then revert back to the regular dosage. Please be aware that it will take time for the algae to react to the lower nutrients.

The Advanced Method. – For any tank.

Using a phosphate test kit determine the amount of phosphate in the system, once that is known then the appropriate dosage can be calculated to remove it. If the phosphate is greater than 0.25mg/l then it is best to split this into two or more parts and dose accordingly to remove it, then dose again in another 48hrs, etc. Do NOT remove more than 0.25mg/l of phosphate in 48hrs as this can shock some inhabitants of your aquarium and may cause mortality. Measure the dosage from the Foz Down bottle and add it into the sump or display tank if no sump available.

The Expert Method. – For any tank.

Using a phosphate test kit determine the amount of phosphate in the system, once that is known then the appropriate dosage can be calculated to remove it. If the phosphate is greater than 0.25mg/l then it is best to split this two or more parts and dose accordingly to remove it, then dose again in another 48hrs, etc. Do NOT remove more than 0.25mg/l of phosphate in 48hrs as this can shock some inhabitants of your aquarium and may cause mortality. Measure this dosage from the Foz Down bottle and add some Reverse Osmosis water. Then drip this mixture into a filter sock on the drain line from the display tank to the sump. Drip the mixture slowly over a 60 minute period. Clean and rinse the filter sock.

Notes: If there is a dosing pump available it can be programmed to automatically dose a certain amount of Foz Down/RO water mixture per day. A mixture can be made and dosed based on how much phosphate the system produces on a daily basis. This will result in the most stability for the animals.

Foz Down is available in a 60ml and 240ml size.
