You can use sprinkler solenoid valves, in my experience they are more reliable (fail closed) and last longer. The valves are cheap at around $20 and available locally, replacement solenoids are also available for them as a bonus. The catch is they are a bit bulky and you have to reduce them from 3/4" to 1/4". You also need a 24VAC transformer, another $15 or so unless you get lucky in a surplus store. Rainbird is the brand I've always used.
