For your overflow ...
You could silicone some small glass strips inside the box - one set for spacers and slightly thicker than the acrylic you'll use, and a second set to hold a sheet of acrylic with teeth cut out of it. Then you just slide your acrylic up and out of the box for cleaning.

I realize you'll lose some of the weir effect, but it'll keep your critters where they belong.
