It didn't sound like they were eating well, just kind of picking. Mine looks like he may jump out of the tank when I pick up the fish food jar, and he fights with a large blue face angel to get to the nori. He eats well
As for how long without eating, I'd usually say 3 weeks max before you hit critical.
