If it is ick 6 weeks min. It's a pita but I would just do it, why set yourself up to repeat the same problem your having now over and over again. Remove the fish to a properly set up Qt, let the main tank tank go fallow. Follow one of the treatments for ick, make sure the life cycle is broken. Down the road QT newcomers.
