Wink Reducing overflow box openings?

My overflow box has typical eggcrate trim. One of my clowns always ends up in the box.

Has anyone found a good way to reduce the openings without restricting the flow too much?

I was thinking on cutting pieces of eggcrate and putting them in diagonally and cut them in two. But I worry my water level will rise.

Here's my box...

I wonder... does anyone care enough to read signatures if you make them really small? I would not. I would probably moan and complain, read three words and swear once or twice. But since you made it this far, please rate my builds.
