Default Best way to remove coralline algae?

It took me nearly an hour to get all the coralline algae off of my powerheads today. I pre-soaked them for around 30 minutes in vinegar and scrubbed and scraped away. There's got a be a better way and I'm assuming CLR isn't exactly reef safe. I'd also like to remove it from the overflows on my tank too, which are internal. Any tips and tricks? I don't want to get an urchin as I do like the algae, I just prefer to keep it on the rocks only.
