Actually the 2x4s are drilled into the wood on the back of my stand. No damage to the wall. My stand is 2x4 construction so lots of spots to bite into.

If you had something fabricated out of metal you could have holes drilled in it, drill holes into th back of your stand if possible and so long as you can reach behind the tank a little you should be able to use long bolts and nuts. Just thread them together with the nut on the back. You'd need very little access to do this.
