This is exactly what I do, but more often than every 4-6 months, probably once a month. I use a coat hanger which works pretty well. Since adding the filter sock though, it may get clogged less, but something more permanent would be nice. A larger sump isnt an option at this point

Either way these are excellent overflows for those thinking of using one. I have had many comments on how quiet it is, and I am fairly confident in the case of a clog/powerfailure.
