I would look at Canon 20D or Nikon D70 or 70s. Nikon just released a new SLR called the 200D you may want to hold off a month or so to see the realignment of prices for the D70. Also if you can wait maybe Boxing Day would be a good day to spend your credit.
If $800.00 is you max and SLR isn't that important I would look at
Canon Powershot A620
or the
Sony DSC-R1

Im pretty sure those cameras are going to be way out of his/her price range. both those cost around 1500.
