If you are defiantly looking at SLRs I would stay away from Pentax. But you are going to spend more that $800.00. Do you have to use the Credit at Future Shop, If so you are kinda stuck with what they sell. But if not..
I would look at Canon 20D or Nikon D70 or 70s. Nikon just released a new SLR called the 200D you may want to hold off a month or so to see the realignment of prices for the D70. Also if you can wait maybe Boxing Day would be a good day to spend your credit.
If $800.00 is you max and SLR isn't that important I would look at
Canon Powershot A620
or the
Sony DSC-R1
