changing out a % of your sand doesnt seem necessary so long as you have sand sifting creatures or even just mix it up as you do a water change. Substrate helps buffer your water and once established...

The slate is siliconed inside on the back of the tank, its actually sandstone so its not quite as heavy... any freshwater tanks i set up in the future will definately have this kind of background.

I would put a water diffuser on the powerheads to spread out the flow. Without them i would say thats pushing it for a lot of soft corals.

My advice, downgrade, keep the best of everything you have and put it in a nano. A 20g with sump or similar you can deck out the nano with TONS of equipment that will make it less maintenance...
