I suppose you could do that as the ends of your box will be the fill in pieces. But if you do your box will only be 2 inches deep. Not sure how well it would drain without making a lot of noise.

Usually, the front and back panes support the side/end panes. With that in mind you'd have a gap between the overflow box and the sides.
