I don't think posting your full name and address on a public forum is very wise, but aside from that...that hurts!! My Yankee friends were talking about "real time" billing for electricity explaining that electricity costs a different amount depending what time of day it is and what time of year. Peak power times are priced higher, albeit not huge. By signing up for real time billing they bill you according to the variance during the day. Paying attention to those peak times, and trying to use power outside of those times has lowered their bills for one guy by 65%! I haven't heard of this before, so I'm not sure if it is available in Canada. Have you heard of this?

I haven't heard of that.
I personally just signed up with ENMax for 5 years for 8 cents a kWh. that will help. thanks for the advice, I will delete the address portion. Neal |
That's about $200 less then my smallest power bill.

might be a good thing the contract, on the news today about a 50% increase in power costs

We have the smart meters here in Ontario. I can tell you that they don't help the reefing game at all!!!! Peak hours run during the normal photo period of our tanks which is almost impossible to get around. Other then lighting things like PH, pumps, heaters are on 24/7 so you can't really take advantage of the off peak hours. I do run my dehumidifier all night long and leave it off during the day, that is about the only significant thing I was able to change. I do shut my lights off from 5pm - 6:30pm (Actinic bulbs remain on) they the full spectrum comes back on for an hour before back to Actinics
Prices in Ontario with Smart meter: 7-11am - 8.9 cents/kWh 11-5pm - 10.7 cents/kWh 5-7pm - 8.9 cents/kWh 7pm-7am 5.9 cents/kWh |
hydro - you on the smart meter? they installed them in london LAST YEAR but we are still on the tiered pricing - they havent moved over to billing by time yet. I am waiting to take advantage of it though... we do all our laundry on the weekends, and the dishwasher is set to turn on at 11pm. I would setup the tank to run lights from 7pm to 7am - they are probably your biggest draw... the heat from the lights will keep the tank warm in teh winter and help keep things cool on teh summer days. maybe even put some of the powerheads on a timer and go down to half flow at night?
