I have these weird things that kind of look like plants growing in my tank. I have had them for quite a long time now, but they seem to be growing more and more these days.

They start out like a little green sprout, and then grow about an inch or two before turning white and decaying away. Very strange.

Attached is a pic to help.

Thanks for the scientific info. However, is this algae good, bad, neutral? How do I get rid of it? Is it beneficial in any way? Why does it keep appearing? etc.

Neutral.
I get it when my phosphates and/or nitrates get too high.

Water change kills them off every time.

Sometimes they also occur where sand accumulates on LR as well.

I like these things but never was able to get any. I guess it is not in my tank so never came out. I wish I had some...very cute little plants.

Ive got neomeris growing on a few rocks in my DT, have had it for 8 months now. Its calcerous based. It comes and goes, the branches turn white and fall off. Havent seen any problems with it. I was worried at first then I got used to it and now its not so bad to look at. Might not like it if it started overunning the tank tho.

from what i have heard about this algae is that it is simular to halimedia... in that it needs calcium to survive... if you dont mind dosing extra calcium to accomidate it then its harmless... i found that they do use a significant amount of calcium...

my 2 cents ...
