your live rock is techinically a biofilter.

what are you talking about specifically when you say bio filter?

You never NEED a skimmer, but it will make your life and your tanks life much easier/happier.

Saltwater tanks don't use mechanical filters like freshwater aquariums do. All of the biological filtration is done via bacteria living in the live rock. The bacteria break down ammonia, nitrite and nitrate via the nitrogen cycle.

In a smaller tank such as yours, it is easy for nutrient levels to get out of control. If you are diligent and perform frequent water changes and are careful with feeding you should be able to go without a skimmer. However if you are seeing excess algae growth you may want to add a skimmer to help in nutrient export. There are several different models of hang-on skimmers which would suit your tank. Its been a long time since I have run a hang on skimmer for a smaller tank and mine was a piece of crap so hopefully someone else can recommend something for you. I don't think you can go wrong with the deltec or tunze brands though.

If you can buy it do so once you have one and see what it removes you'll be glad you did, place an add on here looking for one for sale people always have small skimmers left from tanks when they upgrade that they just store away. I run a 33g with no skimmer or sump you got to do regular water changes and light schedules, I don't run halides on this tank and I kelp it lightly stocked and clean.

Welcome to the reef world cheers:)

I have a 25gal reef tank it has 2 large colt corals, sponge, mushrooms, plate corals, pulsing xenia, large leather coral, bubble coral I think that is it for corals. I have a firefish and two
zebra dartfish, 2 cleaner shrimp, pom-pom crab, hermits and a couple snails. I have a aquaclear 70 filter on it and do not use a skimmer. I just do a weekly water change approx 2 gals or so.
