They are light fixtures that hang from the ceiling or a support above the tank. The ballast is located on the floor or in the cabinet so they are very lightweight. The fixture is made of aluminum and do not need a fan to cool them. Same rules apply to these as to any other MH bulb, they cover a width of approximately 2' give or take. The convenient thing about the hanging system is the height can be adjusted quite easily for cleaning and access to the tank whereas fixtures on tank brackets are limited for height adjustment. I'm using them for SPS on my 90 gal right now which is 4', they could cover 6' but there would be quite an intensity drop, so you would be limited to LPS on a 6 footer. If you are interested in covering a 6' tank for SPS I do have a third pendant brand new in the box, 20K AB bulb, and hanging kit, I bought it without a ballast but I will let it go for an additional $100.
