When someone posts and there are no answers for the poster, the original poster will post another message that just says BUMP so other reefers may get an answer to him on the second go around

And that is because every time there is activity in a thread that thread gets "bumped" to the top of the list of threads in that section. For example, if you make a thread to sell something and no one responds, your thread will drop down the list of threads as new threads are created after yours. After a while your thread might disappear from the first or second page of listed threads in the for sale section. So, what some people will do is make a post to there thread by simply saying "bump" so that their thread gets bumped back up to the top of the list of threads and on the first page, thus making their for sale thread more visible to people :-)

Yes, it has been suggested that 'bump' is an acronym of Bring Up My Post however this is almost certainly a backronym and the usage is entirely consistent with the verb "bump" which means "To knock to a new position". [wikipedia]

oh, and :bump2:
