3/8 Glass

I am wanting to build a tank can anyone tell me what the average price of 3/8's glass is? If you know or can guestimate what 3/8's starfire would be that would be great too.

My plan is 60 x 30 x 24

So the bottom and back can be scrap but the sides will be clean cut and am throwing around the idea of a starfire front.

I think that 3/8 is too thin. I have a 5 x 2 x 2 and it's made out of 1/2" and it still has center bracing. Maybe look up a tank building calculator for proper glass thickness. Just wouldn't want you to have that volume of water end up on your floor. Hope this helps.

I looked it up and it said 9mm thin and 12mm thick.

I am going to eurobrace the top if that helps.

You should go at least 10 mm and 12 is a good thickness.

IMO I would go with the 12mm glass a few extra dollars is cheap for peace of mind and far cheaper than the cost of the damage if the glass lets go.

I was faced with this a while back so I called up Bow Valley Aquariums figuring they'll be the best people to ask. 22" high is the max you can use 3/8" glass. Anything over should be done with 1/2" for safety sake. That was on a 3' long tank. Yours is 5' so I'm not sure how that will factor into things, but I have seen 5' tanks made with 1/2" glass, so you should be OK with that.

Alright anyone know what 1/2" is going for?

Not sure what you are going to pay for 12mm-1/2" out there my cost is around $10 a square but I work with glass. I can tell you that low iron glass will be about double.
Look at the large tempering places out in Calgary they will get you the cheapest glass. (This is where the smaller shops get their glass from)

Great Marlin thanks for the help.
