Hydor Koralia controllable powerheads..
 

Snooping around the JL site and came across these, has anyone tried them out yet? I was a little surprised at the cost. The powerheads themselves are not bad, but the website says they cannot be run without the controller, which is $340. Seems fairly pricey when the Reef Keeper Elite controller will be out anytime for around $550US.

IMO they are very pricey for what they offer and will have to bring the price way down if they want to compete...
Since the reefkeep elite is coming out and controllers out there that do way more for the price like the profliux (bad sp.), and rk elite they are priced way too high.

Hmmm... I wonder if the profilux controller will control these.

At these prices just stick with a tried and true Tunze multicontroller

Keep in mind the Tunze tops out with a higher flow rate over two pumps. That said, the Hydor is still the budget choice.

at only $100~150 difference between the koralias and tunze id rather get the tunze due to the well known customer service that they do. and also dont forget that the tunzes have a smaller footprint then that of the koralias, and more flow so i think that 100~150 difference pays itself off in the long run

I think these new Koralia's are a 12v system. They cannot be run independently, so no mix and match of brands. Sounds like a good DIY project though.

Apparently the regular Korillia's can be run with the seio controller. This is the cheapest option.

Wrong, the Tunze Nano's are smaller. The price I quoted was for the 6101's. If you scale down to the price of the Nano package, you lose out on two additional powerheads and LOTS of flow. No matter how you slice it, the Hydor package is what you go with if you don't want to drop mad money.

The last point I have to make is that Hydor is also renowned for its fantastic customer service.

I'm not biased towards any of the brands, just trying to point out the distinct differences between the choices. It's like considering a Corolla vs. an M6, they are different products for different people and needs.

I suppose I should address the Vortech while I'm at it :)

Simply put, they have had a few reliability issues, but those are relatively easy to solve if you're not lazy. Now, I wouldn't say they are KNOWN for reliability issues any more so than any other high-end brand of powerhead, it's just that they are the most expensive powerhead, and it ****es people off more so when they do break. All things equal, I'm of the opinion that they are easily the most interesting of the propeller pumps and definitely worth consideration over the Tunze's if you're looking for a lower profile product.
