help me rearange my corals.
Hey all,
I was just looking at my tank, and while i like the rock work i am not really satisfied with the placement of my corals and was wondering if anyone could give me some suggestions. i have 3 175w 10k bulbs over the tank so light is fairly uniform. As you can see the right side is the highest and it slops down to the left from there. in this first pic there 3 acro frags, 1 monti frag, some colt frags, a bigger colt, some gsps, and some zoo's http://www.telusplanet.net/~hornys/Sean/fishtank1.jpg in the second one we have the addition of the yellow leather (and my fake urchins.) http://www.telusplanet.net/~hornys/Sean/fishtank2.jpg in the third we have my frogspawn and hammer + 2 small frags at the top http://www.telusplanet.net/~hornys/Sean/fishtank3.jpg and here is the last pic http://www.telusplanet.net/~hornys/Sean/fishtank4.jpg i have powerheads in the 2 back corners + 1 on the side, if anyone could give some advice that would be great! thanks. The gsp's are looking great Sean!
What I would do in your tank is put the colt's on the sandbed of the tank more to the leftside, center in the back of that sandy part. Move the big colony of zooanthids in the 2nd pic to the sand bed as well if it's on it's own piece of rock and is easy. Then I would move some of your sps frags onto the top of the rock work and especially the far right hand rock structure as it (from memory is the highest) may get the frags closer to the top. just some "Artistic" opinions. :D |
thanks.....anyone else?

Wow. Jon is the artist. I would have said you need more rock. :?

Can you get us a full front shot? That should help alot.

thanks for all the recommendations everyone...I was thinking of adding some more rock, but i kinda like the open sand space/lots of swimming room feel (gives me the impression of a bigger tank :D ) i might try and build it all the way to the top on the right side though. anyway here is a full tank shot.

If you add more rock you may have to add more powerheads to keep a good flow through your tank. More rock stops the flow quite a bit. But as your corals grow this is going to happen anyways. What do you like better rocks or coral? I think it looks good the way it sits. The only thing Id change is Id put your SPS pieces up higher in the tank and the softies down low. JMO :D

Well I'd put the Yellow Leather where the Frogspawn is. The Frogspawn where the Hammer is. The Hammer where the Yellow Leather was. The GSP on the sand below where the Frogspawn is but just a little to the left. All Colts to the left some on the sand as some a few inches up on the rock. Put one Acro on the right side rockpile closet to the light. Put the rest of the Acros on the highest peaks of the other rockwork.
BTW What's the deal with the fake Urchins?...kinda curious |
thanks all, the fake urchins are for my male banggai, hopefully when he releases the babies he will release them into the urchins then i can just suck em out with a turkey baster. I caught him last time but it was a little stressfull for him imo.

Looks good Sean! :)
Have you ever considered making those aragocrete arches that I've seen on the GARF site? (I've no experience with them, so someone tell me if I'm out in left field.... )(Jon, have you ever tried them?) Bangaii's seem to love to hang out under overhangs, and the open space on the right side of your tank looks like a good place for one. You could also incorporate some small shelves for future frags. I would suggest a piece of LR to bridge the gap, but you're probably looking at a one or two hundred dollars. BTW, how old is your system? That's a ton of coralline you've got in there....looks good! What are you doing for calcium? Mitch |
