16" or 18" cube, and 1/4" glass

I'm designing a cube aquarium, either 16" or 18", depending if I can use 1/4" glass on either. Anyone know if 1/4" would be safe on an 18" cube?

I'll be supporting it with a heavy chunck of plywood, with two holes drilled in the very middle of the tank/plywood for water input/output for a closed loop that points upwards kinda.

I've seen 1/4" glass with only the weight of the tank and a 1 1/2" hole crack from sitting in the sun... I would put water in it

I had a 18" cube tank made with 1/4" glass, i had no problems.

yeah I think a hole would weaken it. was the hole on the bottom or the sides?

I calculated it that it can have 1/4" on the sides, but would need 9mm on the bottom

Oh and mine had a 1/2" bottom though.
