Making my own rock
 

Me and a friend are thinking about making our own rock now I have observed that coriline algee grows great on pvc parts that in the fish tank any thoughts on taking pvc shavings and mixing them inthe the mix when we make the rock in order for the coriline to go faster

lots of recipes call for plastic shavings.

Do a search on reef central as well. There were a couple good topics about leaching of other components from the concrete mix.
That said, it is just theory as there are lots of tanks with cement in the that are showing no signs of problems.Go to www.garf.org as well. They have some good recipes and ideas.

I made some rock with out any issues, I found a recipe using macaroni too, thought I'd give that a try... the macaroni would make the rock porous, then when you're soaking the rock the macaroni dissolves.... Well... it doesn't.. what a mess, ugly, stinky, horrible, mess... plastic/pvc=good... macaroni= bad.

i think i read on ap that the guy was using super coarse rock salt in his rock to make the porous holes. apparently the salt does dissolve leaving some very nice looking rock.

we should do a big ol' rock making session for everyone interested when the weather gets a bit warmer.

Yeah that would be a fun idea, I've got the cement, no need for everyone to buy it. As for the rock salt, that's a good idea, I bought a 90lbs bag at Real Canadian Super store a couple years ago for $13... that's a lot of salt.
