Piles of arms

A while ago I noticed something new in my tank. Little piles of sand about 2 inches in diameter and just under half an inch high. Then I began to notice what seemed to be tenticles coming out of the piles. The tenticles almost looked like the arms of bristle stars but I can't say for sure if that is what they were. Has anyone seen anything like this? :question:
