RO/DI O ring lube
What do you use for lubing RO/DI (membrane) O ring?
I found a Silicon Grease at HD, is this safe for reef? http://www.homedepot.com/p/DANCO-0-5...8693/203193536 |
I have used petroleum jelly (sparingly) on O rings before and never a problem.
The last time, I did use silicone grease, again very sparingly. You certainly do not need much of either. |
RO/DI O ring lube
It is best to use the same liquid the o-ring is sealing. That way contamination is non existent.

Thanks for your input hilgrom, I really appreciate it.

Just thinking out loud here, but contamination shouldn't really be an issue regardless of what you use (within reason). Does the O-ring end of the membrane not seal the area around the discharge line? If so, the worst that can happen is your waste water may get contaminated with whatever lube you use. Having said that, if the O-ring is relatively new & supple, there should be no need for any lube at all. If there was, one would think paperwork with the new membrane would include some guidance in that regard?

You know, I misread the original post.
I do not use any lubrication except water when I put a new membrane in. I lubricate the big O ring that seals the canister when I put in a new cartridge of carbon or particle filter. I find that helps to undo the canister next time |
thanks guys for your inputs. the unit is fairly new, so no need to lube it.
dang! too much 'you_tube' |
