Feed Live clams from grocery store?

Hi guys and girls,

I am wondering if anyone out there is feeding their fish live clams from their grocery stores?

I know they sell half shell frozen clams at LFS, just wanted to know if we can feed live clams instead?

If you do, do you freeze them? Or how do you keep them alive and fresh?

Do you worry about any baterias or nasty stuff it has?

Thanks

I feed clams and oysters. Fresh when I buy them, frozen after a couple days in the fridge.

Super store manila clams. Freeze & cut in half.

I feed food clams regularly. I buy a few pounds when they are on sale. Freeze them. Take a few out each feeding and defrost them first. Most of my fish go crazy with the clams.

So you guys always freeze prior to feeding? Or can it be feed the second you get it home?

No problem. You can feed them as they come. Freezing is just for keeping them over any period of time. I put the frozen half in the tank on a clip and it thaws right away.

Freezing is to avoid introducing unwanted parasites or bacteria to your tank. I highly recommend freezing them.

Freezing stuff doesn't kill bacteria, simply forces a dormant state. Once thawed, you still have the bacteria.
