Diving in cozumel

Hey me and my wife just planning a dive trip to cozumel, mexico has anyone been ? Any great places to eat/dive/stayat.
We usually are backpack type people not all inclusive people so not in need of a fancy hotel. Any wicked dive sites ( of the many) that we for sure need to check out

Thanks

My wife and I have been to Cozumel three times. The first time we stayed at a B&B in San Miguel called Mi Casa and dove with Aqua Safaris. We only got three dives in because the port was closed due to strong winds.
The second time we stayed at the Coral Princess which is a few minutes south of town and dove with their in house dive shop, Pepe's,
The third time we stayed at Miramar Condos which is a little further south from Coral Princess and dove with Tres Hermanos. whose main business is fishing charters but they were great to dive with.

The dive sites are all north of town so it is bit of a haul to get to them from the resorts south of town. The diving in Cozumel is spectacular. If I had to pick a favorite it would be Palancar reef. Dive ops are numerous. Check out reviews on the Scubaboard forums.

We didn't dine out much, we mainly cooked in or condo but Kinta's was one of our favorites.

Make sure to rent a jeep and tour around the island but take a designated driver. Otherwise take a taxi and stop at Rasta's and Coconuts on the east side of the island.

There are really no bad dive spots in Cozumel, also make sure you go to the far south end of the island and go snorkeling it is a great place to see some rays.

You will love the diving in Cozumel.
By the way I just realized I messed up on my directions. Coral Princess and Miramar are north of town, hence the 30 minute plus boat ride to the dive sites south of town.

Ah ok yea from the looks of it i want to be on the south or west side of the island for quick access

Been a few years, but Palancar and Paradiso reefs both stood out as being amazing. We dove with a charter out of Playa del Carmen, just to the left of the warf as you got off the ferry. Sorry, can't remember the name. Saw my first Goliath grouper there, those suckers are huge, lol.
