Can I run a skimmer only a few hours a day?

So I've got a 200 gallon system that's pretty lightly stocked with fish.

My skimmer is rated for 1000+ gallons

Right now I have my skimmer running constantly and it pulls out a lot of skimmate but I don't think it's constantly pulling because its so oversized

My question is: would it be just as good to just run the skimmer twice a day for a couple hours?

Airation shouldn't be an issue without the skimmer running

I would be leary about turning the skimmer off and on so often as it is very hard on the pump every time it starts up.

What is the intention in not running it?

You could just run it at night but its still going to pull all the crap out.

If this is because of you pale sps just start feeding more. A lot of great sps reefs have really heavy feeding and even better filtration

Lower power consumption

It's the biggest single power draw on my tank

I've tried feeding more. Reefroids, coral frenzy, cyclopeez, and other frozen stuff.

It seems to have the best effect if I turn off the skimmer for an hour or so after feeding

I use to have my skimmer off between 4pm and 1am while i was home, the sound alone drove me crazy. I eventually however got use to it and run it 24hrs. I still wonder if im over skimming and would benefit from only running it during the night.

But what are we talking about, cost wise? Probably insignificant in the overall cost of running a tank!

Cost wise and sound wise. I'm using a barracuda pump to feed it.

I was just wondering if there's any benefit to running it constantly if its not constantly pulling skimmate

Why not sell it, and use the money for a smaller skimmer?
