Othicx's 220g

Before i even heard of this site i bought a 220g tank that i was going to aquascape as a freshwater tank. The day i went to pick the tank up I walked in the door and saw a sweet saltwater tank! This was the first saltwater tank i had seen in person (at least in the last 10 years). It was stunning! Right then and there i decided i was going to do SW. So a month ago I went into Calgary to check some shops out and while at Ocean City i was told about this site and let me tell you it has been a blessing:) Anyway here is a pic of the tank.

I got in touch with Grizz here in Red Deer and he has been a big help with drilling and overall tank layout. Thanks Grizz. I also have had a lot of help from Seamazter, who has sold me some equipment for a great price!
As of now here is what the tank is looking like, and also some shots of the equipment i have.

Now i have also ran into a guy here in Red Deer who is not a part of canreef, He has hooked me up with some great equipment and super awesome prices. I bought a MH light fixture with 2 T5 fixtures that attach to the main MH body for $200. He then proceded to give me a test kit, 30g tank with a filter/skimmer combo and a heater for free!! So i am planning to use this 30g as my hospital tank.
I purchased so LR today and have put some of it in my 30g tank and the rest is being stored at Grizz's place (thanks again Grizz). here are some pics i have taken of the 30g as it sits now.

It looks like a bleached Rhodactis to me.

That could be a possibility.

cool, thanks  I searched google and found that it could be a bleached mushroom Corallimorph. I's that the same thing?

Looks promising. How are you doing the plumbing to the sump? I see the 6 holes drilled in the bottom which I'm assuming will be for a closed loop but can't see what you did for the overflow and return.

othicx 08-25-2010 01:05 AM

well the 1'1/2 and 1' bulkhead that are beside each other will be the overflow, (haven't made the acrylic box yet) and the other four 1' bulkheads are all returns. My pump is a 3600 gph pump so i'm using that power to create enough circulation that i wont need powerheads. That is the plan anyway

Also the Zoa's that came on the LR opened up today, so i'm pretty stoked on that. Also i found another creature in my tank, any ideas?

Sorry this pic isn't that great.

It is some what of an experiment in the making, we are going to have 1 maybe 2 return's off the pump with check valves in case the power goes out. The overflow is going to be a herbie. There is still a little work to do on the sump and figure out how we are going to plumb it all together.

Oh,

I know lots of people do it, but having all the returns at the bottom of the tank, even with check valves would prevent me from sleeping at night.

My chicken advice would be to turn that into a closed loop. 220 gallons is a lot of water on the floor if the check valves fail.

The Grizz 08-25-2010 02:37 AM

If you buy a good quality check valve there should never be an issue and there is the option of a second check between the sump and the return pump.
