Squire's 90 Gallon Build, Now With Salt Water

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18798128/Tan...s/IMGP4226.jpg
Unfortunately, just as I was moving this tank home, we set it down on the bumper of my truck. I guess due to the 50 degree temperature change this nice crack appeared instantly.

On to the next one.

The plan, at this point, is for a Mixed Reef Tank. Eventually.

Thanks to the help from The Grizz, I will now be starting a new tank build on a 90 gallon tank he found for me in Edmonton. Dimensions are 48" x 24" x 18".
Most of the equipment I had for the last tank will work here to start. May need to upgrade skimmer eventually, but for now should be fine. Upgrade needed on lights of course, so will be going with Radions.

Equipment I have:

2 Ecotech Radion light fixtures.
Quiet One 4000 pump
Nextreef MR1 Media Reactor with pump
80 lbs Aragonite sand
2 Pails of H2O salt
2 Fluval 300 watt heaters
Reef Keeper Lite controller
American DJ Powerbar
Lighting Rack (stole idea from Medhatreefguy)

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18798128/Tan...s/IMGP4202.jpg

SWC 160 Cone running for a month on last tank, like brand new

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18798128/New...k/IMG_0466.jpg

100lbs of Live Rock, curing in rubbermaids.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18798128/New...k/IMG_0471.JPG

Pieces cut for stand, just waiting for paint then some screws.
Going to use CIL white Marine paint inside. Haven't decided about the skim yet.

Things I will still be needing :
I have a 30 gallon sump , but would like to get a 40 gallon. I have a trade lined up for a light fixture I'm not using but it hasn't happened yet.
Another media reactor or two.

All I can think of for now.

Fish Wish List :
Kole Tang
Mimic Tang
pair of Gold Stripe Maroon Clowns
Goby/ Shrimp pair
Starry Blennie
Barnacle Blennie
possibly a Blue Throat Trigger.
Lemon Peel Angel
Lyretail Anthias x 3
Black & White Heniochos

I will be soliciting advice as I go, of course.
Getting very excited to get the ball rolling , so the paint will be flying this week.

Looks like a new camera is on the list as well, and will resize all the pics from now on.

It's on my absolute must do list to get the crate built this weekend no matter what. So you need to send me the info on the shipping company & your shipping info.

How are you going to hang the Radions, Mike?

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Although I wish it was a 400 gallon like yours, this will be a big upgrade for me.
Gonna be a blast.

The Grizz 02-10-2012 03:58 AM

The tanks is now 150 Km's closer to you Mike, it's in the shippers hands, let me know when it gets there.

Nano 02-10-2012 04:01 AM

I'm as anxious you to see this one start mike

ensquire 02-10-2012 05:59 AM

I know what I'll be doing next week,.... Have to go out of town for a hockey tourney with the kids or I'd be at it on the weekend.
I will build the stand and set it up at work and water test the tank there, just easier to do there instead of my living room.
Once again a big Thank You going out to the Grizz for all his help.

ensquire 02-15-2012 07:39 AM

I Got A Tank Today

hahaha, I thought the exact same thing before I read it.

Grizz - that tank looked like it was packed to survive a nuclear war! Great job.

ensquire - can't wait to see this build thread! Your last one (RIP) was fun to follow

I should have waited for the tank. I wouldn't have had to buy any material to build the stand

I was not taking any chances getting that tank up north, it had to make it in one piece.

Just used some crappy econo studs so they would not be good for a solid stand

Only took me 45 minutes to tear down Greg's crate to get to the tank.
Put first coat on CIL Marine Paint on top of the primer. Last tank was all black, and the first thing I noticed was salt creep on the inside of the stand. So this ones gonna be all white inside.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18798128/New...15-002-800.jpg

Here is my first look at the tank and it's in awesome shape....

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18798128/New...15-005-800.jpg

So, it's time for my first discussion on the build. The overflow is drilled with 2 holes for a 1 1/2" and a 1" bulkhead. It also has a hole drilled at the top of the overflow for another 1" bulkhead for the return. So basically what I have is a setup for a durso standpipe . My concerns are all about safety, as far as overflowing the display if there is a blockage. I had a beananimal previous and it was quiet and worry free. and it would be very easy set up a herbie and just drill a couple of holes for the returns thru the back or even over the top.
Suggestions and opinions expected here LOL

Went hunting for fittings and valves today, HAHHAHHAHA that was funny. Online shopping it is.

The Grizz 02-16-2012 01:30 AM

45 mins? What took you so long

I have Durso's in all 3 of my tanks and have never had them plug up at all. I have occasionally reached in to see if there is anything in or around them but come up empty. As for sound I don't here a thing from them, the hardest part is getting the right size breather hole drilled in to the cap so what I did was drilled a hole big enough for a 3/8" PVC air valve to be able to fine tune it. Just an idea for you to think about.

Nano 02-16-2012 01:36 AM

I scored a chunk of 3/8" airline today as well, just have to find a cap and valve to control the flow, I like the durso, its easy, and very quiet, I dont hear anything at all. durso all the way

CHEAP CORDLESS
Has anyone cut off the black trim?
what is the best method???

gregzz4 02-16-2012 08:59 AM

Nice paint. Good thing you posted pics, or we'd say it never happened
Lots of ribbin' ya from here too ... what took ya so long to break it down?
Cheap cordless ... BAAAHHH ... you should have been so excited to open it up that, well, you get the idea
Seriously though, Durso ... Herbie ... hmmm
You have the holes to run a Herbie with a return inside your overflow. Lucky you. Check it out, you might be happy ...

gregzz4 02-16-2012 08:59 AM

Oh, BTW, glad you finally got your crate

ensquire 02-21-2012 05:29 AM

Made
some progress today.
Stand is assembled and has second coat of paint....

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18798128/New...20-004-800.jpg

Managed to yank the black plastic off the top of the tank, gave myself a heart attack when one side made a big popping sound as I was reefing on it. thought "Here we go again, breaking another one"
But all was good.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18798128/New...20-001-800.jpg

Pretty sure I know the answer here , BUT,
When I put the eurobrace on, should I stop at the edges and leave the top of the overflow wide open ???? There should still be lots of support with the braces not spanning the entire length and width. Right LOL And lastly, the tank is 48" L x 24" H x 18" D. would you put a center cross brace ?????

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/18798128/New...20-002-800.jpg

One more coat of paint to go on while I wait for my Plumbing fixtures to arrive.. Sure wish I could just get this stuff locally DAG NAB IT

ensquire 02-21-2012 06:18 PM

Anyone ??? LOL

The Grizz 02-21-2012 06:24 PM

Hey Mike, you should go completely to the ends of the tank to make the euro brace as strong as possible. If you dont have the room to get you OF piping in with the euro on then do the plumbing first then put on the euro.

Really ehhh, I would have totally gone the opposite way. It makes sense, just thought that access was more important. Plus my other tank left it open.

I have been thinking of throwing Cheato or some other macro in the overflow,
are there any benefits to doing this ????

The Grizz 02-21-2012 09:30 PM

The biggest problem I see with putting any cheato or macro algea in the OF is the possibility of it pulling of the OF and causing a flood.
