skimmer question

is there an advantage to using two skimmers instead of one large one.
thanks

are two 50g skimmers equal to a 100g skimmer
preformence wise.

people think that 2 skimmers are better then 1, However one will end up over skimming the other one . so you will start to see the other one take over, its almost like wet skimming and dry skimming together

If you had overflows on opposite ends of the tanks and each skimmer was direct fed I bet they would not impede each other at all. I certainly don't know however...

I run 2 skimmers, but had problems initially.

As others stated, one skimmer can affect the other. In my case I was using a EuroReef RS180, then added a Tunze 9010. Problem was that the Tunze needed much calmer conditions than the ER. So the Tunze never worked. I got rid of that and matched things up better and added a Hydor 1000. Both have been running flawlessly for awhile now with no issues.

I personally tend to try and run the Hydor a little wetter and the ER dryer, the combination is very effective.

So besides redundancy, it does a great job cleaning, but be aware... Probably the best would be adding 2 of the same, if not, using 2 that are compatible.

i always wondered why people ran two skimmers, considering there are people out there who don't run skimmers at all or run their skimmers only part time.

Waste of room and electricity, and adds needless complexity to an already complex reef support system IMHO. Get one good one and be done with it. The diminishing returns that you get from the second skimmer do not justify the downsides.
