RECALL: Check Your Hanna ALK Reagent NOW!!

Recently I've found a post on a different forum with a recall on Hanna Alk reagents which happen to be spoiled.

If you haven't been checking your reagent before using them to make sure it's good, then do it now. So far five of my Alk reagent bottles were bad.

LOT 5423 IS BAD
LOT 5554 IS BAD

Go to this link and enter your Lot number and see if you qualify for a replacement. From my research stores are still selling bad stock, so check before you buy!!!

I broke out my new and unused Red Sea Alk test and found the following:

My display tank running zeovit and been testing Alk with the same bad reagent batches for at least six+ months:
Yesterday I was reading 8.58 on Hanna and 10.2 on Red Sea(new kit opened yesterday)
Today I was reading 7.56 on Hanna and 9.1 on Red Sea - stopped dosing yesterday to lower dKh
Based on the bad Hanna reagent I've been running this tank at 8-8.5 on Hanna Alk Checker which in reality is 9.8-10.5. no wonder sps kept on slowly dying.

My frag tank last night was reading 9.52 on Red Sea and 7.62 by Hanna Checker, so a discrepancy of 1.9 dKh - not too bad on this as this system is not running on zeovit so it doesn't need ULNS (only problem is I just finished cycling this tank a week ago so its empty)

Thank you for sharing!

I entered my lot#5489 and it says mine is bad too even though it reads the same as my Salifert test kit. Weird.

From my one day research it shows as all reagents from Q2 2015 and up to today(unless new stock) is bad, so best to check the reagent and check against a different product like RedSea or Salifert.

I checked against a friends Hanna a while ago and results were similar... little did we know both of our reagents were off...

Myka 01-28-2016 09:51 PM

That probably means the whole last bottle I had was "bad". I always check alkalinity against both Hanna and Salifert since it's so important, and I've always had very similar results, including this "bad" batch of reagent.

I'm going to move this to the Reef forum just so that more people see it.

duncangweller 01-29-2016 03:08 AM

Thanks for the heads up. I'll check mine later

shiftline 01-29-2016 04:57 AM

It says both mine are bad.

I mysteriously lost a small chalice and an acan in the pat few weeks. I wonder if that's why.. :(

Wheelman76 01-29-2016 05:29 AM

Both of my reagents are bad and I think all the recent batches are bad. I picked up a Salifert test today to double check , and even though it says my Hanna reagents are bad , they are still in line with the Salifert. So I'm not too worried about it.

Proteus 01-29-2016 01:39 PM

I stopped using hanna alk checker last year due to inconsistent reagents

Thanks for this I'll share it on local fb pages

mseepman 01-29-2016 10:59 PM

I just checked mine and was bad. I have had some real issues with Alk lately and only just recently started using this bottle. Had a handful of coral death lately...very frustrating.

Hanna Instruments recently discovered that there is an issue with some of the HI755-26 alkalinity reagent kits, and our records show that you may be affected. Even if you have had no problems with your tests and sampling at this time, please take a moment to check to see if the possibility is there.

1. Follow this link:
https://hannainst.wufoo.com/forms/w1hzjs2j1b4ejyu/

2. Type in your reagents “Lot” number. If your reagent is from a batch that may be or eventually can have erroneous readings, it will be replaced free of charge directly by Hanna. All you will need to provide is shipping address and proof of purchase. Hanna also offers a 5% off coupon in their store for those affected.

Problem is they don't ship to Canada.

Did they reply to you? I filled the form out with Canadian address. I got the auto-reply, but nothing else so far.

Interesting , I just tried again and it works now. Two days ago when this news first broke about the recall , a message popped up saying
"Only for U.S. customers " , maybe Hanna changed their mind after many complaints about not shipping to Canada.

Last year I needed a new lid for the battery compartment for one of my checkers and a new pack of reagents because I was getting some strange readings. I was told by the guy on the phone from Hanna that they do not ship to Canada , so i had to have it shipped to a friends P.O. box in the states.

Glad to see they are doing the right thing.

Myka 01-31-2016 02:03 PM

Oh good. ^

BobFish 02-01-2016 04:49 AM

i have a US address if it comes back that they don't ship to canada

Ginu 02-01-2016 03:39 PM

I used my US Mailing address and haven't gotten a reply besides the auto response email.
It does say it will ship in 2-4 weeks however... I'm assuming they got thousands of reagents to replace...

brisco 02-14-2016 12:08 AM

well I am almost out of the reagent that came with my unit, turns out its bad...and the one I bought a month ago to use after is bad too! This is the only alk checker I have ever used so now I have no idea where I am at! What is even worse is I just...minutes ago got back from J&L, an hour away:cry:

BobFish 02-14-2016 12:16 AM

Hanna

You can try these #s to find out how to get it in Canada, one is for USA and Other is for Hanna Canada 18008426629 18004266287

Just tell them that you bought it in Canada, i know Canada is doing the recall through distributors, so contact where you bought it from.
US is doing it through link, if you bought it in the states but don't have a US address then you need to contact Hanna Canada.

Hope this Helps

Jordon 02-14-2016 04:10 AM

Mine is bad too.

I'm not too sad as I bought a few in bulk, and haven't yet used this one [Lot 5555] (plus it expires next month anyways) and there's no way I would use it up that fast.

Well, at least Hanna is doing the right thing now, and not ignoring it.

shiftline 02-14-2016 06:59 AM

Has any one received a replacement yet?

shiftline 02-24-2016 04:35 PM

Just curious if anyone has heard back? I have emailed them twice over the past month.. but no one has respond to me as of yet.

brisco 02-24-2016 04:41 PM

I haven't heard anything at all. J&L says 4-6 weeks before they get any new stock. I did pick up a Salifert test kit and ran a comparison with my Hanna....
Salifert...9.9 dkh/3.53 meq
Hanna 7.44 dkh/2.66 meq

Yikes!

Ginu 02-24-2016 05:04 PM

Nothing here.

DiscusZ 02-24-2016 05:26 PM

Mine is bad to have some on order from Reef Supplies since Jan 21st Ray told me yesterday at least another week out before the new reagents are sent out

duncangweller 02-24-2016 05:27 PM

I just got the auto response too. Can the faulty reagents not be trusted at all?

Ginu 02-24-2016 05:33 PM

Anyone hear of the new Alk checker? apparently it uses a powder instead of liquid which is more accurante.

Wow , I did the same and picked up a Salifert kit a couple weeks ago just to see and the difference was only 0.5 dkh. And typically Salifert always reads 0.5 ish higher than Hanna. So my reagent seems fine even though it's on the naughty list.

That's the same exact difference I got testing with RedSea...

brisco 02-24-2016 07:59 PM

I was in a LFS in Victoria over the weekend poking around, they had Hanna reagent on the shelf...Probably part of the bad batch, I assume. The guy working was pretty busy so I didn't have a chance to question him on it. This stuff is still out there! How bad is It? seems like it varies, I guess that is the point.

BobFish 03-20-2016 11:04 PM

I went right to Hanna canada, got mine this past week, all good.

shiftline 03-21-2016 12:33 AM

I emailed them but they never responded. Did so the online thing a while back too

Eastcoast 03-21-2016 03:52 PM

I've been waiting as well, emailed twice with no response. I called Hanna Canada and they had my name in a file with my replacements being shipped out this week so I'd give them a call to check.

How long did it take from the time you made your claim? I am still waiting

Ginu 03-21-2016 10:43 PM

I got mine about 2 weeks ago and I submitted mine when I made this post.

Ironic part is one out of the 7 kits still failed the lot test from the link, but had a tape on the box with the "Passed" on it...

Haven't tested t his test kit against a different one, however I can say they honor the "spoiled" kits if you have proof of purchase.

DiscusZ 03-22-2016 03:55 AM

Here is info I got from J and L where I bought my Hanna Checker

Hanna is replacing the reagent directly. Please contact them at: edge@hannacan.com with the following info:

- Your Complete address.
- Lot number of your bad reagent
- Quantities that you need replaced.

*You do not have to send them the defective reagent.

gmann 03-22-2016 04:51 AM
