So do I Laurie.......I have never seen them in the wild before. There was hundreds of them at this one site. What beautiful fish! and some were so large I could not believe it.

The yellowfin tuna/mackerel that we caught fed a lot of folks from the village. All the fish went to the locals.(~35 Kg) The colorful pretty ones we just took pictures of...LOL!

I loved that place! Used to go there a couple times a week when I used to go to Mexico with the ex. If you rent a car and make the drive you can find locals who will take you out there for way less than one of the tours you buy in PV...but you gotta find the right local ha ha...it was great though.

We found that out. We stayed at the Barcelo......so we were just south of Los Arcos. When we kayaked out of the bay we were about 1.5 kms from the Arcos. We found the right local!! LOL right next to the hotel as there is a fresh water stream that comes into the ocean and they dock their boats there. He took us siteseeing/fishing/whale watching/snorkeling all in one tour for about 6hrs....it was great and we will do it again. The Barcelo Hotel is across the road from a small fishing village called Mismaloya.

Although they have a similar look the angels pictured above which frequent the waters around Vallarta are known as Cortez Angels I believe. They are an awesome looking fish and in great abundance in that area. Some of the best scuba diving I've ever done is in the Vallarta area, Chimo at the southern most tip of the bay.

Yes I love PV as well, want to move there eventually. I know some local divers and we went spear fishing. Caught it, cooked it, ate it. Oh yeah baby!

I know Mismaloya well! that was our favorite place to go. The ex and I had a condo just north of the Malacon in PV (in the venetian)...but would go for lots of drives through the surrounding areas.
It's been about 4 years since I've been back though. Went to Cancun last year and that was just as fun! touring the Mayan ruins was intense!

Actually Cortez angels aka Pomacanthus zonipectus don't really look like King/passer angels aka Holacanthus passer. Cortez angels are tropical eastern Pacific, from the Gulf of California south to Peru, the Galapagos and mexican Revilla Gigedos Islands.

Sorry I stand corrected, thank you. I dive in Vallarta a lot & I often hear the dive crew referring to these as Cortez but then again I've heard them say other things I know are incorrect so there you go. Gorgeous fish no matter what you call it.
