Awsome tank.......im just starting up the same tank 48x24x24 waiting for it to be built right now...I love your choice of fishies....A snowflake is going to be my main fish.

I would love to see some closeups of him and the cave you made for him to hide in.

whatcaneyedo 08-06-2010 03:28 AM

I didn't really aquascape any specific caves into my rockwork. Mostly I just used as large of rocks as I could find and spaced them all apart slightly so that he would be able to move between them without knocking them over.

This picture is pretty recent. I dont have too many full body shots as he rarely comes out completely.

Wow that eel is magnificent! Haha for a second there I thought I was looking at a pair of them .

Seth72 08-06-2010 05:10 AM

He is a beautifull fish...cant wait to get mine......this is a stupid question, but I am new so i can get away with it. Your eel seems to stake out its spot and be quite nice,if you were to put a larger cleaner shrimp,or crab in ther would they survive,I know they eat them, but i thought maybe if you kept him well fed he wouldnt feel the need to eat them.

I love cleaner shrimp, but i love the eels far more,I wanted to start this hobby because i fell in love with a honeycomb eel,i thought he was the nicest fish I had ever seen, but i have decided that a tank with just him would have been kinda boring, not to mention way to big

Thanks for the picture .....always love to see them...does he come out and play at night with the moonlights on?

They have one (snow flake) at west edmonton mall where i live...that they keep with two kinds of sharks, not sure of what kind ,but last year i went to see him and he had a chunk out of him the size of your fist no kidding.....and on of the sharks was dead floating upside down...score one for the eel.I emailed mall manager to get the eel some help ,but never heard back.

whatcaneyedo 08-06-2010 05:50 AM

I have long wanted to keep a cleaner shrimp with my eel as well. I actually asked the same question a while ago in a thread but was told that it would most likely get eaten. I've only ever put a hermit with the eel before and just for a few minutes. The eel became very interested in the crab and the crab was very interested in one of my snails... so I removed it before the slaughter could start.

Sometimes the eel comes out at night and snakes around through the tank but not very often. Hes more likely to come out every second day around feeding time if I dont feed him fast enough. But usually he just pokes his head out from one of four spots.

Seth72 08-06-2010 06:01 AM

Oh well, guess the shrimp is out.Thanks.

On the topic of eels, they have a dragon eel at big als up here he is in 90 gallon with no hiding space...doesnt look very happy.Only one I have ever seen, they want 1600 bucks for him,but i dont think he is very nice, pretty ugly.

reefwars 08-06-2010 06:05 AM

that eel has been there forever i doubt they will get what their asking 1600 is alot of cash for one eel:)

yeah you bet...i think he will die before he gets sold.

reefwars 08-06-2010 06:09 AM

my snowflake devoured a cleaner :( and ate all my crabs:) now he rarely comes out unless its hungry enough to come out i usually just stick my fingers in there blindly with food and hope to keep all my fingers:)
