Quick WP40 Review

I posted a review over on the Reef Supply Canada website so here's a lazy guy's cut/paste/edit version for Canreef:

I was reading the discussion over on Reef Central about this pump when I happened to see a pre-order listing for these at Reef Supply Canada. My curiosity got the better of me so I snagged on of these just before the order deadline. The shipment arrived quickly and communication was great as is usual from Nick. It arrived in the box pictured on the order page. It luckily arrived in great shape BUT it really should have been double boxed. I doubt that the manufacture's box would be up to the usual rigours of Canada Post. While I'm grousing, many forums indicate that it ships with a resistor for the night sensor. No such goodies arrived in my box.

So, it's been installed for about a week on the end of a 6' long 100 gallon tank. It's more than powerful enough to create waves that can slop over the ends of the tank. While I was adjusting the settings I noticed that the pump had some zoos in the intake grill. The flow had ripped them from their mother colony, dislodged my monti cap and a blew over few other corals. If you don't want to do involuntary fragging I'd be careful choosing modes. It had a bit of a buzzy noise when ramping up/down but that disappeared after a few days. Now its very quiet. My favourite mode is "Else" which is similar to a random setting. The corals (that stay glued down) seem to love it. The controller doesn't have the flexibility of my MP40 but this is offset by the ability to direct the flow (like a Tunze?).

The tank always has had a bit of a surface film that I've never been able to skim off through my hang-on overflow. After first installing the WP40 it agitated the water well enough to send the film (and a whole lot of other suspended crud) through the overflow and into my sump where the skimmer and socks could do their jobs. I'm still messing with finding the optimal placement on the glass and best settings. While "else" is my favourite mode it can create the odd random high wave that can induce some mild arse puckering. Time will tell how reliable these are but it seems fairly robust so far. I'm going to get another and retire 3 of the Korallias.

Sounds good Darcy, thanks for the info.
I just ordered two myself, I've done some reading on a few forums and should be able to wire this into my profilux with a little DIY.
I've read a lot of people did not receive the photocell, sounds like it didn't run so well anyway. If mine come with them, they're yours if you want them.
From what I've read, you either like them or hate them. But for the price, I'll take the chance. I'm starting with two for now, but think four total pending placement.
I'll post what I find as well.
Thanks,
Bob

Tagging along. I'm debating of getting one or waiting for the wp-25 if it will come out. I'm in no rush so time is on my side. If I were to get a wp-40 I would have to do a mod. Prob just the voltage selector for power supply. Only about $20 to tone it down.

The Codfather 03-31-2013 02:35 AM

Ya, the wp25 is not far from release.
I may get two of these as well just for fun......

Kevany 03-31-2013 03:47 AM

I ordered one of the WP40's last week for my 90 gal on line $107.00 including shipping. The rumor on RC is that the WP25's are only rated for 3000 l/h.

ImprezaSTi 03-31-2013 05:31 AM

You have to look really carefully for the light sensor, they put it in the small clear bag with the stickers. I thought mine didn't come with it either but I discovered it a few days later. It's smaller than the size of a pin

I'd heard they were small and was careful to look for them. If by the 'stickers' you mean the sticky tape they send to mount the controller, that bag was open and the contents were loose in the box, so who knows. The box has two open slots where the ends meet the bottom. Anything that small could have easily made its escape. The ties used to bundle the cords were just loosely twisted on and the cardboard pieces securing the contents were flattened. It all had the look of being opened and poorly re packed. I know Nick would have made it right but it's not that big of a deal to me since nothing was broken and the important bits were all still there. I only mention it since it might be an issue with others more eager to use the sensor.

Reefer head 03-31-2013 06:04 AM

Where can I order these pumps ?

Kevany 03-31-2013 12:04 PM

PM sent with link to web site.

Reefer head 03-31-2013 02:41 PM

Awesome thanks man I just ordered two of wp40 pumps

SteveConn 04-03-2013 02:45 AM

I ordered and just received 2 of these from the company in china. Very powerful. Just have them running in a tank of tap water to allow anything to leach from them ...just in case....
I figure they can always be used to mix salt water if I decide to keep them out of the tank, but they look pretty good and can really move water!

That's a good price, where did you order it from?

reefermadness 04-04-2013 02:31 PM

I just ordered one last night from fish-street. I didnt know you could get them anywhere else.....

Cant wait to check it out.

scubadawg 04-04-2013 04:14 PM

I asked David at Aquagiant to bring them in, since he's a Jaboa dealer, don't know when he will get them, if he can, he's checking into this

H2o2 04-04-2013 05:34 PM

reefsupplycanada.com i believe is a dealer and he is out of Kelowna and an order is coming soon

Kevany 04-04-2013 06:29 PM

These pumps are getting pretty good reviews on Reef Central, some that have bought the WP40's are so happy with them that they are selling off their MP40's.

Same place as reefermadness, when I purchased mine it was preorder so I received 10% off. If you use coupon code fishstreet you will receive 3% off.

Reef Suppy Canada seems to have dropped thier price since I ordered mine to be more inline with the dealer in China.

mrhasan 04-04-2013 07:12 PM

I contacted directly with jebao for the pump. Their price is $40 for the pump. When I asked for shipping, they said its gonna cost $80 to ship to my address and I was like WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!

chris121277 04-05-2013 11:57 PM

Any chance someone would take a shot of one next to a Korilia Evo for size comparison?

All the pictures I've seen of them I haven't been able to picture just how big they are

The Codfather 04-10-2013 03:07 AM

Both my pumps arrived in the mail today. Packing was very good, everything was in the packages, including the photo sensor.
After playing around with them for the past hour or so, for the price of each pump, Id have to say well worth it. Ill get some pictures up in a few.

Got mine today too. Can't use the w1, w2, w3 or else because they are too powerful and my sand is getting blown away. But overall, its a killer price for such equipment.

Just a heads up for those who would like to know the size....ITS HUGE! The diameter is around 4" and the length too.

Its only 3 5/8", so not that much bigger than a tunze at 3 1/2".
Very comparable on size.

True, I have both of mine on else in the display and its throwing all sorts of debris in the water column.

rhody605 04-10-2013 03:45 AM

Bob. Do you plan on connecting them to your controller?

Yah. After turning it on, I realized how much debris my tank had lying around the rocks :P And the fishes were like HEY YOUUUUUU!

BTW anyone trying out variable power unit?

Ya, I think I figured out a way, Im just getting a few things together.
Ill post up what I find and results, its going to be very similar to what I did with the eco pumps I bought.
I just have to do a bit more reading.

The Codfather 04-12-2013 05:07 AM

Ok, parts should be here tomorrow. I have a rough schematic, this will eliminate the jeboa controller all together and the profilux should have total control. I hope.......
If all goes as planned I have plenty of pictures to help out any body else who wants to do this.

WP25 vs WP40

http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...ps8554dd28.jpg

Heres a picture for size comparison, should be available by months end. I think the pricing will be around $50/each.
Just so you know the prices of the WP40 have actually gone down.
Good news for everyone as far as Im concerned, affordable powerheads with the ability of wave generation or full control with a controller.

It looks so tiny LOL.

I don't think it will be around $50 but much more less. I am sticking to something like $20-$30 since they are going to be 3000LPH (around 800gph) powerheads. A $50 won't sell it. The wp40 itself is market at $40 at jebao; the sellers are taking advantage of it :P

Oh that makes sense

rhody605 04-12-2013 03:16 PM

Looks like Fish-street dropped their price of the wp-40 by $10. Prob so with the voltage selector they sell now the total would be same price as before.

mrhasan 04-12-2013 04:42 PM

OOOOOOOOO I can already feel the strong breeze of words coming from brand lovers ;)

globaldesigns 04-12-2013 05:02 PM

So do any Calgary LFS's have these, or are bringing them in?

I don't think any LFS will be bringing these any time soon. These things are so cheap that the overhead cost of the shop won't justify selling this (atleast that's what I am guessing). Maybe this is the reason every LFS sells vortex and not koralias ;)

Treebeard 04-12-2013 05:50 PM

For those who bought these, how long did delivery take? I ordered one from Fish Street last week.

The Codfather 04-12-2013 07:12 PM

9 days. no tracking number or anything, they just showed up.
Well packed, no damage.
