At what value does your tank temperature leave your comfort zone?
In other words, when do you start to panic about your tank's temperature ?
|
My 93g cube is sitting at 82. Don't have any sps left after a semi crash while I was in Bali. Lps and fish don't seem to mind, but if it gets any higher I'll start panicking. Thank god I'm running LED's.
|
agreed. my temp doesn't change at all no matter how long my light is on. i can't imagine what my temp would have reached the other day if i was still using halides.
|
83 is my panic point as well. It hovers around 81-82 on really hot days like yesterday, but is typically around 80-81 I think. Today it maxed out at 80.6. If I recall correctly the ocean's reefs average highs are around 82-86 ? OR somewhere there abouts.
|
i'll bet if your reef is always at 83 it's no big deal. as someone said the swing seems to be deadlier than the peak temp if the swing is large enough.

84-85 I get slightly worried, I had a dwarf fuzzy lion fish survive 95 a few years back but nothing else survived
|
I was fretting when one of my tanks would get up to 82 during a warm spell. My other tank was on a chiller, so temps were always in the 78 - 79 range.
Then just last week (before the real hot spell hit) I combined my tanks into one sump with the chiller. Now both stay down in that 78 - 79 range. In fact, over night had my heater come on a couple times as the temp dipped below 78 (heater set to come at 77.9). And we keep our house central A/C at 74. So I am a happy camper now. |
My tank goes from 78 to 82 every day, when it reaches 84-85 I start to panic

I want to know who is panicking when their tank reaches 78 degrees!! I would be panicked 365 days a year if that were my case

My tank was at 84 Tuesday and I didn't have a panic attack so I guess it must be higher than that.
|
I hit 85 on Monday morning. I quickly got the temp down with A/C and a direct fan, now it's hovering at 79.9. I had no ill effects from the high temperature, it went up slow, came down slow.

I like to keep mine between 24 & 27. I must be the only weirdo using C.

Most of the SPS were cooked and all monti had bleached last summer when it hit 86. I have removed the glass top since and the temperature had dropped at least 2 degrees. Lucky that my tank is in my half basement so it rarely reaches that high. I will leave the MH off when the next heat wave comes. |
I voted for 79 degrees, and would only panic if it went over 80-81F, but it never has
My tank is very steady @ 79F and I have no issues as my heaters and chiller work well on my controller |

We bought AC and cooled the whole house 2 x 10, 000 BTU inits :surprise: It cost a lot for the short heat-wave, but it was worth it when you have to sleep Think about working in the heat all day, then coming home to 98-100F heat in your house ... and trying to sleep ... I always said I would never spend the money on it, but I finally had to buy AC Here's a warning for those of you who haven't used AC yet in a heat-wave .... Our units are 10,000 BTUs each, and suck 900w each. I use them to cool the whole house with the furnace fan on for distribution With the 2 units running through the first heat-wave we had, we incurred a $250.00 bill, so you decide how often you're gonna use it/them  ... |
My SPS reef used to get to 84-85F every summer for a few years until I got a more effective fan setup. It hasn't gone over 83F yet this year. The colors fade in the summer, but it survives. My panic temperature is 86F. I've only seen bad things happens at that temp.
|
I get concerned when my tank hits 82 or so, it hasnt done that since we moved into our house 4 years ago. When it gets up around 86 I start to go into panic mode and investigate potential causes. Last time it was a skimmer pump with a seized impeller that shot up the temp. Lucky we have ac and a very cold basement so we dont have any problems with summer temperatures. I'm actually more likely to have problems at the other end of the temperature scale and had to add a 2nd heater...

Bumping this thread because it was warm here in the GVRD today. My tank got up to 78.8... not quite worried yet, but I am starting to think about the summer days ahead. Maybe it's time to get a chiller.

When I fire up my wood stove downstairs in the winter, my tank bumps up to just shy of 81. I normally keep it around 77-78. I haven't noticed any ill effects from that much temp rise.
