Hot enough for ya!!!!!

Just wondering what people are findin for tank temps. Just started floating ice in my sump tonight as I had an 85f temp in my tank this afternoon &$?! ;( between me and my tank I wish it would cool off. Can't wait till fall myself, ya I'm sick but I just hate the heat. Hopefully I do t get sent to kelowna for work or I'm toast!!!!!!!!

Carandiru 06-30-2013 06:52 AM

Yeah darn hot I cut a hole in my canopy over my tank and mounted a tower fan sideways to blow air directly thru the lights and too the water lol works good though

neoh 06-30-2013 07:06 AM

I hit 87 this afternoon, had a stand up fan on an ottoman pointed into the tank. Bu the time I finished my waterchange, it was down to 78. :\

Heat

Tank in basement,holding at 79

Ram3500 07-02-2013 04:58 AM

I have been running my chiller all day and its struggling to keep it cool I am a 80.2 now but was up to 83.00 than he apex shut everything down . Last heat wave I lost a huge brain coral for some reason my chiller didn't work . I am running my metal halides 8:30 to 3:00 and after just LEDs and one 56 w pc to cut down on the heat . My thermostat in the house has buried the needle

Mike-fish 07-02-2013 08:31 AM

I've got around 15g worth of frozen ziplocks ready to go. And looks like dad is giving me the all clear to order a chiller tomorrow:biggrin: I'm thinking a 1/2hp for the 270g as the system is about 330g. As for the bio cube looks like ice bags for the foreseeable future.lights have been reduced to 3 hours as well (3x400w mh)

Aquattro 07-02-2013 12:02 PM

Really glad I kept my chiller after switching to LED. Tank is sitting at 78-79 all day long.

Reef Pilot 07-02-2013 01:06 PM

I recently combined my tanks into one sump, so I can take advantage of my single chiller. Works great and keeps my temps steady around 78. Just in time, too, with the hot weather that came on this weekend.

HaZRaTTy 07-02-2013 04:10 PM

Blarg up to 86 yesterday and as of now sitting at 80!

lastlight 07-02-2013 04:15 PM

i've got a fairly complex controller setup. when I check on the tank and it's 80 or higher I automatically grab a frozen water bottle from the freezer and toss it in the sump. I shut the freezer door automatically as well and place the old water bottle back into the freezer. yesterday was the first time the system had been triggered and there was an audible alert issued as well. It's currently configured with language filter set to "adult".

kien 07-02-2013 05:30 PM

Central AC is currently keeping my tank topped out at 82 during the day. This is typical for my tank during the summer months. 83 is when I start to get concerned. 84 is when PANIC MODE sets in..

lastlight 07-02-2013 05:49 PM

i've now got a fan over my sump holding things at 79 but I'm sure I'll need to drop more ice in today.

Marlin65 07-02-2013 05:52 PM

I hit 90 on my cube this weekend so it was time to do the transfer to my drop tank with LED's that is running at 80.

reefbrian 07-02-2013 06:45 PM

My house is currently at about 82F! Last summer my 60 cube hit 85F and I lost some sps. This year I plumbed the filter 14ft below into the basement. I put a 4ft 50g sump in with a reeflo blowhole pump. The tank was at 82F yesterday. I put a small clamp fan on the sump and bam 78F. :-D

I just installed an ac unit into my fish room. Holding tank at 78 degrees.

Ac unit is the best thing ever

kien 07-02-2013 08:20 PM

wow, you guys run really low summer temps. maybe I should turn up my AC

Coralgurl 07-02-2013 08:57 PM

Got home from camping yesterday and checked my tank - was creeping up to 84. Nothing looked ****ed off though. I've had a fan running on it all weekend - like the bagged ice idea, will have to get some made up.

My house was sitting at 31 yesterday....was cooler in the trailer this weekend without the a/c running....

Holy mother!! I should have turned up my AC..

Sorry for dragging you out Tony! Hope you're OK!

HMD 07-02-2013 10:35 PM

Just hit 84 and been icing my sump faster than I can freeze bottles....just got serious and put 15 more bottles in the deep freeze

And the power just went out!!!! $&@?!&@"

toxic111 07-02-2013 11:56 PM

My tank made it up to 78.2 today. Thank god for ac & the LEDs.

neoh 07-03-2013 12:44 AM

My tank hit 86F when I woke up yesterday morning, with no ill effects to anything. The fish were all swimming around, the corals were out and there was no sign of any danger. I needed to top off, but that was the extent of it. I added 5g of 75F water to it and everything seemed to have been fine. This morning (after cranking the AC of course) it's now staying at 80 all day. Whew!

HMD 07-03-2013 01:15 AM

No ac that's my problem, my place is a solid 95 degrees and tanks sitting at 83....,been only running my lights late nights. Mostly everything is looking good though I have a severly peeved maxi mini I'm worried about and think I'm going to loose a Kenya tree I just picked up

Madreefer 07-03-2013 02:01 AM

Before I switched to LEDs I used to fill up an icecream pail with my tank water, freeze it and than once froze just put the big cube in to my sump. Worked great!

lastlight 07-03-2013 02:04 AM

well my fan couldn't fight it back down to 78 from 79 which sucks. in goes a bottle of ice. i really wanted to have a solution that works when i'm not home! maybe it can hold 80 until tonight when it starts cooling off but i'm not going to bother finding out if i can help it.

You'll love/hate having that big brute of a chiller - power pig/heat generator
I hope you have somewhere to run it where you can vent the hot air away from your system

I kept the 1/10HP chiller we ran on our 36g (was lots of overkill)
It's in my office beside the sump and runs all year. The heaters and the chiller keep the tank rock steady @ 79
But, with it this hot, the house hits 85+ and my office is even hotter (I blame the chiller)
With it that hot, the chiller can't function properly

We have 2 x 900w AC units for the whole house. One is in my little 10' office ...
I have to run our AC so I can sleep, so I currently have the house @ 79 (coincedence) and all is working fine, but the 900w AC unit in my office window has the room temp @ 74/75, so I have to wear a t-shirt in here :surprise:

bit the bullet and installed the window ac for the main floor. i tried going green but it's showtime.

Green Shmeen
It's the money that hurts
I've been running 1800 watts of AC since Saturday
First year we installed it, we ran it through a heat wave and our bill went up by about $250 :twised:

I try my best not to use it, but can't sleep when the house is over 85

fishoholic 07-03-2013 04:04 AM

I'm running a portable AC unit and my house still hit 30 inside  tanks were 80-85 depending on which one

canadianbudz604 07-03-2013 04:16 AM

Damn

My house is 85
My room where the tank is probably the same with humidity at 100% it feels like a hot sunny day in Mexico in my room. On a side note putting a frozen bottle of water in my hob ac110 keeps the tank cool all day.

Mike-fish 07-03-2013 04:17 AM

the chiller (trade wind) i'm ordering tomorrow is a drop in type and the compressor will sit outside so heats not a big problem. the power bill being high is nothing new.

hfp75 07-03-2013 04:17 AM

back on track....

I set my APEX controller to manage my temps....

81 - send me an email
80 - dusk / dawn (acitinic and super blue) T5s shut down (x2)
79.5 - daytime T5s shut down (x4)
78.5 - fans on tank and sump start
78 - where I want to keep it
77.5 - fans turn off & heater will also turn off
77 - heater will turn on

Its hot out and hot at my house no AC in the fish room. Second floor in townhouse. Today the lights were shut down and fans on when I got home - and the tank temp was slowly cooling. So its working.

Its not the temp that is always the problem, its the swing of the temp......

kien 07-03-2013 04:17 AM

Tank maxed out at 82.3 today for about an hour (7-8pm). I was thinking about pulling the lights but after the halides went off at 8pm the temp started to drop immediately.

Also, the AC at my office was busted so it was really nice to come home to a more comfortable environment.

Ram3500 07-03-2013 04:24 AM

priceless

$400 chiller pumping heat back into my house all day long :(
$ 30 fan on a chair drops my temp 2 degrees fahrenheit in hour :drinking:

brotherd 07-03-2013 04:30 AM

Tank is 82.1 but the house is blazing hot. Sump is in the basement with a fan blowing over it now. The auto top off is gonna be busy. Rodi lines are sweating like mad due to the cold water flowing through them.

reefbrian 07-03-2013 12:13 PM

I just finished an attached garage reno. We made sure to put R40 at least in the attic space. The main house is lucky if it has R15. The main house was 28 deg yesterday and the garage was a bearable 24 deg. Want to save money on air con and help the tanks? Way cheaper in the long run to rent a blower and add more insulation to the attic..... That's what im doing next week. :-)

Reached a record for hottest day in Edmonton yesterday in recorded history. With the humidity it felt like 43

Jeff000 07-07-2013 03:46 AM

My heater still turns on in the summer.....

But then central A/C keeps my house at 21C (what's with all this farenheit bs? this isn't merica). And tank being in the basement it's always a couple degrees colder down there. Although I do go through more top off water with the AC running, lol.
