Which corals tend to grow out of control
 

So far I have read that green star polyps, mushrooms, and xenia can grow out of control and take over a tank, so I am inclined to avoid them. Are there other corals that have the same habit of growing out of control?

montipora digitata can geta bit "weedy". However, aside from the shrooms, there is no reason to avoid things. As long as you put your GSP or xenia on a rock that is separate from touching other rocks, they won't spread. You can just remove the rock to trim the colony.
Mushrooms do tend to pop up in weird places all on their own, so unless you want mushrooms, it may be best to avoid them.

Although it is a good way to make some extra dough.

I got Xenia everywhere, my anthelia is not a problem... easily peals off. I thought GSP would be easier to peal from rocks but they are not so now I am regretting whats going on there. :eek: .. Mushrooms I don't have a problem with, I find them easy to remove.

How are you removing mushrooms Chad? They are one of the problems with my tank and I still haven't found an easy fix.

Add Cardinals to the list of corals that get out of control. Also some types of sinularia can grow too fast and end up occupying most of your tank.

I'd like to hear how to remove mushrooms as well. They are not out of control yet, but they are getting there. So if anybody here in Calgary wants some purple mushrooms, let me know!

One thing I found interesting is that while my purple mushrooms are multiplying like crazy, I had some green hairy mushrooms that withered away and died. The only thing I can think of is that they were incompatible with another softie in my tank. Also I had the same with green star polyps- instead of growing they just withered no matter where I put them in my tank.

ok, my way of removing mushrooms probably will seem rather messy. But I have a small blade like algae scrapper that I use to literaly sheer off of my live rock. Usualy they come off in one piece. Sometimes not. But I throw them in my grow out tank and within a day or so it looks perfectly fine. The ones that grow on the glass are even easier.

I have ongoing nightmares with Red Mushrooms growing out of control. Then there are your Mutant Ninja Purple Mushrooms, and some Brown Button Polyps. GSP's can be a problem. Among things that just grow fast are Colts, Sinularia dura, Devil's Hand, and Toadstools. I have also found Organpipe to be a bit weedy. :rolleyes: It seems that if you have smaller tanks a lot of pruning is necessary :eek:
