Canada Corals warehouse build thread

Ever since we moved into the new warehouse, I haven't had time to hit the Forums as much as I would like so I decided to start a build thread to document our progress and keep you guys updated.

Here is a picture of the warehouse:

We took delivery of our glass yesterday. That is 4 tanks and 2 sumps. We are building two systems (SPS and LPS) that measure 16ft x 4ft. The tanks measure 96x48x14.

We will be building our stands out of Bosch 90x90H t-slot extruded aluminum. It's total overkill but we got a killer deal on it so why not.

This is a sketchup of how we plan to build our stands:

This is our water changing station. I posted this pic before but I forget where.

We are still waiting for some hardware from Bosch so I cant get started on building the stands until I get those parts. I was told it would be another 3-4 weeks.

I will post more pics as things progress.

Yeah for sure. If we paid retail for it, we would be bankrupt.

Bblinks 05-23-2013 10:38 PM

How does the Bosch stuff compare to 80/20? Glad you got a sweet deal on it

Bugger 05-24-2013 01:46 AM

Are you planning on glueing the glass together yourself and if so can you show how you did it. What is the glass thinkness of the glass you bought

Bosch offers many different fittings so the options are only limited by your imagination.

Bosch designed this stuff for more industrial applications.

You can have a look at all the options here:

Yep. We will be building the tanks ourselves.

I will certainly document the silicone process.

We picked up one of these bad boys yesterday.

It's a DRI-EAZ LGR 2800i low-grain refrigerant commercial dehumidifier.

They are primarily used for flood damage so wont have any problems keeping the humidity low in our facility.

It's socking how often humidity is ignored by fish stores.

PFoster 06-06-2013 03:10 PM

Thats a beast of a dehumidifier!

TimT 06-06-2013 04:01 PM

That is pretty huge.

I would highly recommend a Heat Recovery Ventilator. Carrier makes a good commercial unit.
It is important to cycle air through your warehouse.

I agree.

Right now we are opening the garage door to let in some fresh air but eventually we will need to get something that can exchange our air automatically.

Got some progress done on the dry goods wall. It was challenging to say the least to find a way to cover the electrical boxes while at the same time being able to access them. The slat-wall board is on a hinge.

We also painted a blue border around the entire warehouse to integrate our logo color.

We finally got our jig that was special ordered from Germany so we got started on building the stands.

It took us all weekend to build this 1st system and we still haven't done the light rail yet.

To say this is overbuilt, is an understatement. :)

So all the stress looks to be shear stress on those bolts. The vertical parts themselves do not directly bear any weight?

The vertical posts will bear some weight on the ends.

These connectors are rated to hold 1,124 lbs per set (2,248 lbs total per corner) so I am not worried at all. The tank will only be 2,500lb filled with water and that weight is distributed evenly. The connectors you see in that picture are also underneath the beam so its 8 connectors per corner.

You could drive a truck on this frame without any drama.

We've got some interesting things coming.

We are planning to have touch screens for each system so that our customers can shut-off the powerheads to look at the corals top-down. They will also be able to turn the lights off so that its only actinic. That way they can see what the corals look like @ dusk/dawn. :clap2:

wow good plan! i guess it's easy to put all that stuff on timers so that they come back on on their own. Great thinking!

Bugger 07-12-2013 07:58 PM

can you get out the camera and give us an update

HaZRaTTy 07-29-2013 01:55 AM

Dammit I was just in the Ottawa and Staying in Gatineau for an entire week! If I had only waited an extra 2 months I could have came down and checked everything out first hand.

Looks great, and good thread! Updates would be fantastic just as Bugger said

We just finished installing all the glass on our coral bed stands and finished all the silicone. We are now working to get the plumbing installed.

We still haven't decided if we will be running EcoTech Radion Pro's or GHL Mitras. Once we nail that down and place the order, we will be able to move all the corals out of quarantine and into the new coral beds.

I totally underestimated the time required to get our website back up and running so I do apologize for that. We really need to make sure we are well organized before we mark everything back in stock.

We also want to add a bunch more corals to the website before the "re-launch" so when we are ready, I will create a new thread with the announcement.

We really appreciate your patience. The wait will be worth it!

Each of our systems is 64sq/ft of coral bed to light up.

PAR38's do make corals "pop" but they can't be compared to a Radion Pro or GHL Mitras. I am looking for a fully controllable solution that is full spectrum that can ramp up/down with independent control of each color.

Jeff000 08-03-2013 12:29 AM

Looking good. Hope to be able to fill my tank soon.

Just when I think your set up can't be any cooler you drop that bomb that you might be going with GHL for lighting. Either way Radion/Mitras it will be something special.

The main reason why we were considering Radion Pro's over the GHL Mitras 6200's is because EcoTech provides 3 meter extension cables to make the distance further from the light to the ballast and GHL does not offer that option. After speaking with Mike from AquaDigital, it turns out it may be a possibility.

Super Excited! Cant wait to check the store out to see the progress. The stands are going to look amazing.

xenon 08-06-2013 12:15 AM

At this point, we are just waiting for the overflow boxes to be made before we can add water. Then we will need to add all the supporting equipment so that we can start filling the beds with corals. All the equipment and sump under the stands will be hidden with white acrylic panels once the build gets closer to completion.
