that's a sweet set-up you got there.

bades 02-24-2013 04:36 AM

Really, that's everything from your 250? Looks so empty compared to the old tank! Good start though.

kien 02-24-2013 04:59 AM

That is a really slick looking tank!

These are really nice looking tanks I saw one at big Al's recently. When everything is manufactured to match... it does!

I was wondering when these tanks were going to hit the market in Canada. Nice looking setup. You'll have to let us know how the stock skimmer works out for you in the long run.

Also, how easy is it to fill the auto top off reservoir on this system as I know they have it tucked away in the back bottom portion below the rear overflow?

yycguy 02-24-2013 09:15 PM

Here is a picture of my 250 stocked before move to the 500

Red Sea does say it will be upgradable to LED lights , I guess will wait and see. I do know at least one guy that has installed Vega's in the stock light canopy.

The RTO reservoir is great, very easy to fill and seems to hold about a weeks worth of evaporation

First lift up the rear light

Open the reservoir lid and fill

As for the stock CSkim skimmer I guess I will let you know, over on another site they seem to be saying its ok, not heard great but at least doing the job.

A few more pictures, also finally got word that the Apex controller was being shipped! It's been back ordered for over a month!
With that I am getting the usual Temp, PH, plus the Ecotech module and floor leak detector.

Tagging along on this one!!

Wow! It is really looking great. Nice looking tank.

yycguy 03-18-2013 08:19 PM

So to do a nice install of my Apex Controller I didn't want to hack apart the stock electrical drawer, so I made a new one.

I don't think you're doing this right. When I topoff my nano I consistently pour a bit down the outside of the tank as well. Maybe practice with a smaller container until you get the hang of it.

ORA Borealis in the middle, it has doubled in size in the last month and a half..... But I think the base should be a bit darker might move it a bit lower in the tank??

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/05/01/zygasyme.jpg

Not sure what's going on with this Chalice ? It was much darker and the back 1/3 still is..... Doesn't seem to be loosing tissue? And if its bleaching out why? It's on the bottom of the tank.

If I had to guess, i would guess that your Purple Tang owns the tank at the moment. This means that any fish you add after him is going to get hazed. The severity of the hazing will depend on your Purple Tang's temperment (how mean he is) and how threatened he feels. For example, if you put in a tang of a similar shape to him then he will probably feel VERY VERY threatened and will want to KILL the new addition. Luckily the Achilles Tang doesn't look anything like a Purple Tang so in theory your Purple Tang should feel slightly less threatened. However, your Purple Tang will probably still want to assert his dominance on the Achilles. It's hard to know for sure how long this will last. Could be just a few hours. Could be a few days maybe. There are things you can do to help though. What works for me with most of my more aggressive fish is the mirror trick. I tape an Ikea mirror to the side of my tank and leave it there for a few days. All my fish go crazy over their reflections and generally leave new additions alone. Also, introduce the new fish at night while the other fish are sleeping or groggy.

reefwars 05-23-2013 03:33 PM

Couple things I've noticed about the Achilles tang

Lots of flow......as much as you can provide this fish loves turbid water

Bullying.....Achilles should be added first if lots of tangs, while they can become aggressive them selves and make it hard to add other range they don't do well with being picked on and your shooting for stress free as Achilles are ich magnets.

Food.........be prepared to feed this fish like no other fish you've fed, mine gets pellets every hour and could prob eat more.

Disease ......they are ich magnets that's why no bullying and lots of food and flow.

Size.......be prepared to rehome this tang with in 1-2 years if you can even find a small juvie:)

Beautiful fish but hard to take care of and some sacrifices to be made:) they need to stay fat and ich free

+1 .. they live right in the surf zone in the wild. Very strong swimmers!

To be honest if it were me and this my tank, I don't think, that I'd consider it for a 4' tank. They'll do so much better in 6' or more. Maybe if you found a small one with the intent to rehome down the road (or upgrade) but IME small versions of large fish rarely stay small for long. Probably not the advice you were wanting to hear, sorry!!
