flame wrasse

Hey everyone!

I just noticed today that there was a Hawaiian flame wrasse at j and l for $56.95! Am I missing something, or is this a totally different fish? I'm used to seeing these for $250-300.

Wheelman76 10-27-2012 06:16 AM

It was probably a female

windcoast reefs 10-27-2012 06:17 AM

Right I forgot about that! Thanks!

Wheelman76 10-27-2012 06:23 AM

Were you in the store and saw it? Or just saw it on the website?

windcoast reefs 10-27-2012 06:49 AM

Just saw it on the website, going over there soon, just checking out what they have.

Females won't be that cheap. Doesn't make sense. I'm guessing they mislabeled a fairy wrasse of some sort when they were uploading onto the website.

Yup, most likely Myka is right. When a store gets in flame wrasses they wouldn't be that careless to incorrectly price the expensive wrasses. Those are the fish you really pay attention to because they are soooo expensive to bring in and some times very delicate in transit to boot. But hey there are TONS of pretty $60 wrasses out there.

I was there , yesterday , they have one but for 185$ !

That's really strange! I'll get the Latin name when and hopefully that can clear it up!

Wheelman76 10-27-2012 05:54 PM

Nothing mislabeled , that's what they sell females for. I was talking with someone there in livestock a few days ago ,and was told female flames sell for $59.

Good to know, maybe I'll pick one up and save up for a male later.

arash53 10-27-2012 06:21 PM

They got one male in their last nigh shipment, he was 185$

I have seen female flames for $60-70 in town here. I have also seen them for $100-$150. So it certainly is possible to find a female flame for that price. I think it depends on the stores's cost (from the supplier).

Mandosh 10-27-2012 08:19 PM

I'm staring at their in-store price list right now: $53.45 (f) or 123.95 (m). $184.95 for a pair. They have a Tonga pair in stock.

Wheelman76 10-27-2012 09:30 PM

Yes the pair they have at JL right now is $185 for the pair , but they are Tonga Flame wrasse.

not to kill the buzz about this wicked fish.............but has anyone had one long-term? I have owned many and have imported them..........as they come from deep cooler waters I have never had luck with them. When I say long-term I am meaning more than one year. I won't be buying them anymore despite their beauty.

chandigz 10-28-2012 04:19 AM

I've had a female flame for a couple of years till it jumped.

chandigz 10-28-2012 04:21 AM

What about buying 2 females and waiting till one changes to male? anyone experience this?

I know 2 people that have had them long term. One had it for 3 years the other for 2. They both jumped because of uncovered tanks.

You can also just buy one female and it will eventually change into a male.

I've heard of that, any idea how long it takes?

Wheelman76 10-28-2012 07:50 AM

From what I've been told , it can take up to a year.
