Works great, not mine. This is RC model and not RS model so it is more expensive. This can be used in sump or externally

You might want to mention the RC means recirculating (where the RS is flow through). This is a great skimmer! I have the RC-250 and it is a helluva skimmer.

How would this skimmer do on about 225 gal?

depend on the load.

It is rated for aquarium systems of +/- 180 gallons with a medium bioload. Comparative Rating: 450+gal.

no you don't because you can hook it into the drain line
