New to Canreef

Hello Everyone.

Thought I would say hello. I recently moved up to Prince Albert, SK. From Minnesota. I was keeping fresh water for about a year and then the Salt water bug hit me and I switched to salt and have not looked back. Been keeping salt for about a year as well (2 years total). I started both a pico (3g jbj picotope) and a 46g bow front tank with a 10g sump. Both tanks were taken down before the move, a friend took the livestock from both.

I also have seen that Bayside Corals in saskatoon is probably the best/only close coral selling store close to PA? If anyone else can point to others close to PA or saskatoon please let me know.

Also, right now since money is tight from the move. I am looking for any reefers that live in the prince albert area that have a tank they might be changing water out of soon that I could get some dirty water out of to fill my 46g so I can start the cycle going. I have 4 5g jugs and a couple 2.5g travel water jugs. I could pickup when available.

Thanks for reading. And I hope to be starting some tank threads here soon!

Welcome to canreef.....whatca want dirty water for?

Ashlerbam 04-30-2011 03:28 PM

Haha. Well dirty water just to grab something for initial start since I can haul, and most people just toss the water I figure its a good way to get a free fill on the tank. Also it can add things to help kick start the cycle.

Welcome to Canreef.

There are a few Saltwater fanatics in the PA area. You might want to link up with them here: http://www.saskreef.ca

I can do that. Here are some pics of the 3g when it was up. And then followed with my 46g when it was up.

Unfortunately, I did not upload many photo's of the 46 from the phone to photobucket. I will have to do that later to show some more pics but here it is after the setup.

The 3g took some damage in the move. A small crack in the corner. So I might be changing that to a 5g for my kids room and the 46g is in the living room waiting to be setup and cycling again.

Ok, Maybe I am just being stupid but. I can not seem to get the random question on the registration for that site correct. Anyone know what they are looking for as the answer for the question? HAHA, Let me know in PM if you can get passed it. Since I have tried pretty much any correct answer lol

Welcome!

There are two semi-local saltwater only LFS near you:

The Reef Shoppe in Lloydminster, AB
Bayside Corals in Saskatoon, SK

If you put live rock in your tank you won't need to use dirty water. Nitrifying bacteria cling to surfaces for the most part. Only a small amount will be in the water column. Live rock will cycle the tank all on its own accord without the need to add fish, fish food, or used water.

Btw, you should have an email from SaskReef regarding your signing in issues.

Thanks Myka

I will be using BRS eco rock for my tank. For 2 reasons. one i dislike most live rock hitchhikers and the other I have all the rock I want/need already haha. The water was just a hope for cheap way to fill the tank the first time :)
