ok ok so I can't keep the tank down much longer

so I am restarting the 30 gal project and I need to find a show piece fish to live in the tank. lets hear the sugestions. I would like a tang, but even as liberal as I am I can't justify one in a tank this size, 40 gal maybe but not 30. I don't think I want clown fish.

the tank will be SPS and bare bottom with extreamly high lighting levels. over skimmed and very high flow.

That and a whack load of sexies and you got my vote.

Or...

If they can handle the SPS flow requirements.

hmm, not realy good at all, linkia's require a min 50 gal tank for 1, and dont do extreamly well in captivity, besides I am not realy kean on starfish.. some tend to eat corals, clams, ect.

blood shrimp are reclusive and not realy a show piece..

ya with the flow I plan on these poor guys would be flat. and I don't realy condone seahorses in captivity soooo..

hmm this is going to be hard.. need a very active swimmer... is there any small tangs?

Steve

Aquattro 02-02-2011 03:13 AM

I do like anthias but I would want a few and for that you need a bigger tank...

jorjef 02-02-2011 03:25 AM

I can't remember who had that GIANT green brittle star (pic of it in a salt pale) but he would fill the tank..... Or a guppy!

Steve's gone to walmart, he'll be back later. This is all just a game. He wants someone to validate getting a tang, but he knows Wayne will get him! Bad Steve...-lol

toytech 02-02-2011 03:51 AM

some kinda flasher wrasses like a couple McCoskers , or maybe a huge tang , with enough flow it will feel like its swimming realy fast and wont need much space !

get an Achilles or unicorn tang! i hear they adapt to whatever size tank they are in...

(did i do good brad?)

but in all seriousness.

one of these would be cool
http://liveaquaria.com/product/prod_...17&pcatid=1917

flame hawk fish.
maybe a neon dottyback or a member of the dottyback family with some color

jorjef 02-02-2011 03:55 AM

Is he back?? Cus i want to give the guppy another plug..

jorjef 02-02-2011 03:59 AM

I know it's on everyones most hated list, but if you had two or three Yellow tail blue Damsels and nothing else....... the blue could look super neon under the right lights...

Mandosh 02-02-2011 04:26 AM

Swissguard Basslet

...or if you really want to drop some cash.

I have 3 of these and love them. Problem with these guys is I started with 16. They tend to like killing each other

thanks. trouble maker

Seriously though, even though I don't conform to the 200 gal plus for a tang crowd I couldn't justify one in a 30 gal tank, unless it was a very small one, but then I am not planning on getting a bigger tank when it gets bigger so it would be irresponsible of me to get one in the first place.

I was thinking of a coral beauty (some one mentioned a dwarf angel) as I have had good luck with one before in respect to the corals, but I don't know how they are in very high flow conditions. maybe I might have to drop the tank flow to under 100X turnover.

i had one in a biocube with a mp20 full bore and a k1. and it was fine. how much flow were you thinking?

well I was looking at about 4500gph in a 30 gal tank. but it will be through out the tank and no jetting, more of a mass water movment

Steve

Why on earth would you want that in a 30g??

lastlight 02-02-2011 09:17 PM

4-stripe damsels. They looks fantabulous with sps and I'm sure they can handle your flow. I also think they're quite attractive.

tidal simulation, also the higher flow you can produce with out jetting increases the health and color of your corals assuming everything else is adiquite also.

I guess it just sounds a bit excessive to me :)

Once you've mastered the art of 100w of lighting / gallon you gotta get creative.

I had a 135X turnover rate in the 94 gal, why not shoot for this or a little higher int he 30 gal. one thing I can tell you about high flow rates is that it reduces if not elimanates bleaching as I found out by taking a birdsnest from a low light tank and then fragging it up and putting the frags about 6" from the surface in my old tank. the corals should have bleached in 5 min but they didn't bleach at all.

hmmm.. I still don't like the watts per gal comparasons.. doesn't mean anything. I could get that level easy with 100 watt bulbs but they wouldn't grow nothing but algae

I am actualy looking more towards 4.8 watts of light per gal, with this tank

Steve

Aquattro 02-02-2011 10:17 PM

Just thinking about the requisite velocity of that flow and the distance required to disperse. I think the fish might get pinned against the glass :)

thats why I want a strong swimmer silly  besides the flow will reverse after about 5 hours and be chaotic for about an hour then he will be on the other side

Steve

toytech 02-03-2011 12:50 AM

4500 gph , are you putting an evinrude in there , or are you more of a marine chevy big block kinda guy for flow like that !

fiorano 02-03-2011 01:03 AM

...4500 gph eh? id say a sea horse ... or maybe a pipe fish.
but if you really want that display fish look. hatch about 300,000 brine shrimp in there. Man would that ever be fabulous!

Yeah I know that =) Was the wittiest thing I could come up with. I'm in no way saying it was witty but...well anyways I'm curious to see what you do lol.
