J&L line up

Ok, so I drove by J&L, thought maybe I would see a few hardcore reefers there..but there was none.. I am shocked

One_Divided 12-26-2003 08:06 AM

hahaha, that'd be taking "hardcore reefer" to a whole new level..

pinner_28 12-26-2003 02:52 PM

I'm not all that impressed they are including all the discounts to everyone just bescause we don't live in the lower mainland.I was hoping to pick up a few new additions for the tank but they seem to have excluded us out of towners for any specials on the livestock.

Terry

pluff 12-26-2003 03:15 PM

Hmmmm from my dealing with them (JL) over the years i find there the most rudest people i've ever talked to on the phone.

Chad 12-26-2003 04:52 PM

They had some good prices on livestock.. I thought everything on sale at the store was on sale at the website as well?

pinner_28 12-26-2003 05:17 PM

No they excluded us out of towners from any deals on livestock. You can't bitch about there pricing but it would have been nice to have been included in the whole sale and not part.I try to come in whenever i'm in town to pic up a few things.we haven't got a lot of choice here in the okanagan for stores and there prices beat most everthing so i have bought most of my needs from them in one way or another from the store in person or small orders for additives and misc on line. There service is a little bit much at times but have been treated worse at other stores.Just don't feel it's fair to exclude a portion of you buissnes from saving at you store doesn't sound fair to me.Just my ****ed off two cents.
Terry

christyf5 12-26-2003 05:25 PM

Well I am thinking that it will be hard enough today to deal with all the customers in store buying stuff, let alone trying to keep up with the massive influx of online orders for livestock. There are only like 4 people working there and they're probably ALL working a very long day today. So what happens when it comes down to tons of people ordering online for something and they're sold out?? Yes it sort of sucks that we can't get livestock online but I can totally sympathize with them.

Just my two cents

Christy :)

Aquattro 12-26-2003 05:28 PM

Terry, I sense that you're angry about something...

pinner_28 12-26-2003 05:35 PM

would it not be a great idea to have somone looking after the online orders only so that they get looked after in the same way as the people lucky enough to be able to grace the store today and recieve the same great deals.I now they are probaly al going to be beat tonight when this is al over and i feel for them al but thats al part of having a sale.I'm not ****ed off at anyone in general just would like the same great specials as the locals.I'm not sure what it is but i would think the online orders are probaly a good size chunk of the pie that keeps the great prices that they have and it would be nice to get a bit to.

Terry

Aquattro 12-26-2003 05:42 PM

Terry, I agree it would be good to get the deals online, but I think Christy's explanation covers it fairly easily. Having someone on the phone taking orders means they wouldn't have time to answer questions about the livestock, etc, and then they would get complaints about bad service, yada yada....
I can understand why they do it this way, although an announcement in their newsletter might have been nice.
Try to not let it ruin your holidays!!

Quinn 12-26-2003 05:48 PM

Fair? It's a store. They own it, they can do whatever they want. It's unfortunate there aren't such dandy LFSs in other parts of the country, but that's life. There are no rules for holding boxing day sales.

golden69_ca 12-26-2003 08:14 PM

here is to all you winny online order people . i have been in there to pick up some live stock and have had to settle with at best mediocure shape live stock becouse the best shape ones are used for online orders .

so there is my 2 cents

Veng68 12-26-2003 08:27 PM

I just got back.......... 25% off inverts 35% off fish (or maybe it was 20 & 30). It was hella busy. Too bad they did not have the freshwater tanks up & running.

Cheers,
Vic

pinner_28 12-26-2003 08:46 PM

hey Golden
I don't think your getting the point i have bought a few pieces from them when i've had the chance.I've never gotten rotten livestock but have seen some nice pieces so i'm not sure what you saying.I was hoping to pic up a few good deals with the drystock i was hoping to get.So if your unhappy with them then why do you shop there if you think you getting second rate stock i've been happy with any in store purchases i've made in the past and could never complain about the quality.
The winner

golden69_ca 12-26-2003 08:53 PM

hey pinne your not the only one that whent out to and i dont just shop there . just pointing out how well they look after there online customers

pinner_28 12-26-2003 09:06 PM

no problem Golde.Just was venting my concern didn't want to sound like a winny person.

pluff 12-26-2003 09:29 PM

I agree with pinner.I've spent thousands of dollars with them over a couple years. They should have ONLINE SPECIALS for us out of town people (out of Province)I had a order all ready to put in with them about a week before christmas worth easy 500 (LIVESTOCK).I called them today,to see about us out of province people, even about the free shipping over 300,but that only worked for DRYGOODS.So i asked them about putting my order in anyways they said you would be best to put it in for the 2nd week of January  I said well i guess us people from the other parts of CANADA mean nothing to your business then eh? He said were busy enough here that MO is just a bonus.......I said fine F#$%^ Y#$,and i will buy my livestock and drygood elsewheres. Also i said if thats how you feel i'm sure the rest of us people from Eastern Canada that shop there WILL KNOW ABOUT WHAT YOU TOLD ME.

Pluff

Bob I 12-26-2003 10:09 PM

So why not take them at their word.? I am sure it would be a large bother to ship livestock 5000 miles. Rather than bashing them online, I am sure you could find a supplier down there to take care of your needs.

Samw 12-26-2003 10:28 PM

So why the swearing? It sounds like they are only confirming that phone orders are not accepted during Boxing Day. They've clearly advertised this. If you want Boxing Day prices for your drygoods, you can order them online. This has nothing to do with not servicing other parts of Canada. I'm sure anyone from any other province can order online without a problem.

Golden, I agree. There are many times, I go there and there are corals or clams in their tanks that I want to buy but turns out that they've all been sold to the East. Its disappointing because its like the best pieces are sold before I even get a chance. But I don't go around swearing. Its just a tough break. Bad luck. Wait for the next one.

Veng68 12-26-2003 10:40 PM

Also......... maybe all you out of towner's can drop an e-mail off to J&L and suggest that they have a special internet sale on live stock for the out of town people who could not take advantage of the boxing day sale. It would give J&L some time to replenish the live stock (they are quite low now) and give you a chance to get a deal.

Just a thought.

Cheers,
Vic

kuatto 12-26-2003 10:46 PM

Hey,now there's an idea

Chad 12-26-2003 10:53 PM

Well, I did not buy much... I just grabbed a light bulb and a air pump some flatworm exit and that was it.. I wanted to get some corals but.. I held back. Anyone know if its one day only or if they continue for a day or two more? Though I am guessing by tomorrow it will all be gone..

BTW, I was the first "hardcore reefer" there this morning. woohoo.. I thought someone else was but apparently they were working there..

Samw 12-26-2003 11:02 PM

Chad, the website says 26th and 27th.

Bob I 12-26-2003 11:09 PM

I have been reading a lot of complaints in this thread. I am hoping it was from people who have not occupied this planet long enough to realise you don't always get what you want. :frown: I for one am a person who has been around for awhile, and I am very happy that places like J&L, and yes even MOPS exist. , I have always received the best of service (something I can't say about our local dealers) from both these places. When I want something, I order it, and within days it is here. Although I have to put up with UPS. (who, although I only work in the afternoon, invariably show up when i am at work) To those not happy, I say suck it up, maybe tomorrow you will get all you think you deserve. :2gunfire:

Samw 12-26-2003 11:18 PM

Hopefully, you don't think I was complaining. Just trying to help people see how things go both ways. J&L is doing the best they can to make everyone happy. Imagine driving 60 minutes to the store only to find out someone ordered all the <fill in the blank> online before the store opened (yes, they could place limits, but the logicistics can be a nightmare).

No, indeed Sam, I was not referring to you.. As to driving an hour to find someone online has snapped up what you wanted, is really no different than saying hello to your buddy, who has picked up what you wanted two minutes before you arrived. Life has a habit of biting you in the a**. We have to live with that, and move on.

Chad 12-26-2003 11:32 PM

Too me its all good. Was so packed in there some people might say the staff was rude but they weren't. You can't expect the world all the time. And they cannot help everyone at once, as it is they had about 7 people working there today. It was nuts this morning.

psuedo 12-27-2003 12:57 AM

I have been sick for the last little while and didn't get a chance to go and check out their sale, however all I see in this thread is a whole bunch of whiners. It is pretty simple, the sale on livestock is for here. If you want it then travel to get here. If you think you are getting ripped off, then buy everything from someone in your vicinity.
This is a waste of time thread. If you want to complain to somebody then give them a call, but I am sure they will tell you that the answer you seek is stated quite clearly on the website. If you complain even more, then I am sure they will quite happily hang up.

Chad 12-27-2003 01:55 AM

Well, unfortunately it was not meant to be a thread for people to let off on. Was suppose to be fun about getting up early and being in line.. guess things got off track

kuatto 12-27-2003 02:20 AM

So,this is all your fault Chad
Seriousely though, did you see any outstanding deals on livestock that made the trip worth while?or were they low on livestock?

Jim

Namscam 12-27-2003 02:21 AM

I do my best to start engaging posts!

Well, the selection was good for inverts and corals.. all in all I think most people that were there left happy. So I would say yes. I saw a few people in front of me lay down over 700$... so.. must have been good

pluff 12-27-2003 08:26 AM

 Hmmmmmm but i love it. The thing is that my post is true.

:x-mas:

LostMind 12-27-2003 09:36 AM

I have to say, that I like the staff at JL and they have always been very helpful when they have time. They do spend quite a bit of time with their customers, you just have to have patience... most times when I visit, I stay at least an hour. Mostly because they are on the phone taking orders or answering questions or taking care of another client.

When they are finished I get great service. And knowledgable service. I like that and will wait for it.

As for livestock, they have flat out told me that ALL the good livestock is shipped. I was specifically referring to corals at the time (sps) because all they have in their tanks are BROWN.

Anyways, I stopped by today at 11:30 -12:00 - trust me, you missed nothing by not getting a deal on livestock. Did you want the 1 madnarin dragonet in the store that was missing an eye (but otherwise healthy) or the 6 sharknose gobies or the few tangs and couple of chromis?

Their tanks were empty today. The dry goods, I picked up a few things (and some extra live rock at $3.99 per pound). I was happy I could save a few bucks somewhere. Would have loved a great fish (I am still understocked) or a great piece of coral, but I am not whining that there wasnt any livestock in... it's just a fact of life.

IslandReefer 12-27-2003 04:00 PM

Online J&L

I made a large order @J&L on,Boxing Day,online. I forgot a small thing and didn't want to ship it separate and pay shipping. I called and was helped with in 2 miinutes...and not rude. Mind you I am treated much better, at Safari Pets, a LFS, but for large orders or speciallity items...it is basically J&L only(esp prices),therefore J&L becomes a large cross country mail order supplier, with the volume and less individual attention. Even though I wish the staff would not be so rude to us customers (should be easy to fix if anyone knows the owners) ,I'll take rude and relable above lip service anyday.
John

StirCrazy 12-27-2003 11:35 PM

I can't belive people are bashing J&L because they are not having online sales on live stock. I do believe that it is the store that decides what they are going to put on sale for boxing day and not the people and I also belive that they can set stipulations.

this is like bashing futureshop because they only had 10 of the 27" tv's for 199.99 and I didn't get one

if you sit and think about it instead of freaking out, there are several logistic reasons why it makes sence to offer local only discounts on live stock.

Also they have no ailinated online people at all there is free shipping on orders over 300.00, you think that some one who goes in to J&L to buy something asks for a extra discount because they don't need the free shipping?

Steve
