Flow Rate
So I went out and purchased 2 Koralia Evolutions (1400gph) for my 50g based on the recomendations of a lfs. Just in the middle of cyling my tank, and I am just doubting if it is to much flow in the main tank..... Also have a sump that is rated at 230gph max, but don't think that is based on the 4' calculations. Am I going crazy?

Flow rates, patterns and sump turnover are widely discussed topics. A search on here usually turns up some good information. Or cruise the tank journals. Is it a premade manufactured sump or just a tank with some baffles?

is your tank only 3' long?
those evo's will be pushing alot of flow |
By calculations that's just a hair over 60X turn over.....so if your doing an SPS tank that would be fine
what are your coral plans? |
The sump is a modified Oceanic Trickle Filter, with one baffle put in it.
The tank is 3' long. I am doing a mixed reef, which include some SPS and other corals. Basically I am shutting down my 25g tanks that is currently setup and moving everything over to the 50g. Thanks for all the responses, I appreciate the input. Jeff |
IMO those 2 HK will generate too much directional flow for your tank. 4 HK 750gph or HK3 (850gph) will be better.
I know how much flow a HK generate because I have both HK 1400gph and HK3 (850gph). The flow is not that wide unless you mod it. That's another story. |
That's ruffly what I was running on my 55 before I upgraded to the 90...and it was a little tricky doing a mixed reef.....but if you spend a wile getting the flow set up just right you should be fine.

I am interested in the mod as well. I have 2 koralia 1050 in my 75 and they generate too much direct flow and I want something wider.

Is this mod for the Evo's or the old models?

ahhhh, opps my bad! lol

Anybody want to trade the 1400's for the 1050's? No matter how I position them, they allways kick up the sand....

If you were closer I would....have you got all the rock in that your going to use? Also keep in mind that as the sad matures it won't blow around as easily.
But good luck, I'm sure some one in Edmonton will jump on that deal |
I have about 30lb of live rock in the tank right now, the other 30 is going to come over from my other 25g tank once this one is done cycling. I will keep that in mind about mature sand. Been playing around with placing them, and I think I might have it figured out....I have them placed on the sides aiming at the back of the tank, and so far it seems the only place that it won't kick up the sand.
