Bio Beads/Pellets
Has anyone tried the Vertex bio beads/pellets as opposed to the NP ones, I assume they are pretty much the same thing....
|
There is a Vertex bio beads? up until now i thought there is only one pellets being offer from oceanic corals. Where do these sell at?
|
J&l has this stuff
|
cool, price is very competitive. Now, i see why oceanic corals are slashing their prices
|
I have seen at least 4 different variations on these Nitrate/Phosphate reducing "bio pellets" now. I think pretty much everyone has started to jump on the bandwagon with their own take. I saw a few bags of the Vertex variety at Red Coral last weekend :)
- The "original" NP Reducing Bio-Pellets - NpX bio beads - Vertex Pro-Biopellets - Warner Marine EcoBAK solid vodka dosing pellets .. just to name a few. Oh, and Instant Ocean now has a "fluid form of Solid Vodka Dosing via Suspended Biodegradable Polymers" ??? |
Do you know if they are they all exactly the same thing or distinct products and what are you using?
|
Exactly the same, they come from the same manufacturer and contain exactly the same natural biopolymers. The Vertex Pellets are the same excellent quality. Our new "EXTRA" beads, will be similar size as the Vertex version but more concentrated. Our price is lower and you get 50ml more product! |
so for a 180g with 70g sump, what kind of reactor do i need to put them in? phosban 150?

You had best go with the Phosban 550 with that size tank with 800- 1100ml of Beads. We have some great Bio Bead and Reactor Combos available right now including the new Phosban 550 reactor and RIO 2100 pump, all in stock and ready to ship! When bought as a combo the beads end up being about $33.00 a bag. |

Thanks for the heads up Kien, I will definitely pop over and get some.

Whatever reactor you use, don't cheap on the pump ! Get a lot more capacity than you think you'll need. I have a TLF Phosban 150 with the 'standard' MaxiJet 1200 and I can get a max of about 200ml of pellets to tumble properly.
I'm running the valve that comes with the reactor (wide open) and will remove that completely the next time I open/clean/top-up the reactor and see if I can add a touch more pellets (250ml ?). My system volume is only around 35 gal so this isn't a problem for me but I was a little surprised by how much pump was required for such a small amount of pellets ! |
All these reactors and none are 14in. in total height, which is all I have in the cabinet where they are going. Anyone seen any that are shorter and wider?
Thanks |

- Two Little Fishes has pellets - Tetra has their pellets (although they claim to use only in FW but seems similar compound). - Redsea has a similar fluid version (but the pellet is the best bang for the buck) I bet we are gonna see alot more of these leading up to macna |
Our smaller pellets are now available and we will be making an announcement post shortly. We are selling our smaller NpX-Extra pellets in 600ml quantities for the same price. |
