you runnin that light full blast?.....could be tip burn from the light.......alk is a titch low, but not obscene.....

the marine apprentice 06-10-2010 12:10 AM

looks like your burning the tips off derek. just like doug said

Lance 06-10-2010 12:10 AM

Looks like algae to me. More flow and less nutrients needed.

Trocar61 06-10-2010 12:14 AM

Should I move it lower in the tank....I have flow hitting it hard cause thats what i thought, but seems to be getting worse...

christyf5 06-10-2010 12:23 AM

It should be getting indirect flow. Its possible that the flow is taking the tissue right off the tips if its right in front of a powerhead. Maybe move it a bit lower and out of the path of direct flow. It doesn't need a ton of flow, just moderate.

i'm leaning more towards tip burn as well. is it only this colony or are others showing the same signs? was this colony new to the tank?

i would raise your light a bit if you can

It is only this colony. And yes it is new to my tank maybe three weeks when I bought it.

So I took this coral out of my tank and dipped it....and a little crab came out of it one claw bigger than the other. would that maybe be why this coral is doing what it is doing. cause this little bastard crab was chewing on it What do you guys think or would it not hurt my coral? :twised:

hillegom 06-10-2010 10:01 PM

Bloodasp 06-11-2010 12:05 AM

If that's the same one then it was ID'd here

It is pretty much reef safe and actually helping your coral according to where you took the picture from.

xtreme 06-11-2010 12:11 AM

You want those guys. Acro crabs are a good crab to have.

madkeenreefer 06-11-2010 12:16 AM

looks like alk burn to me , check your test kit

christyf5 06-11-2010 12:21 AM

That is a commensal acropora crab, they don't harm the coral, just live within it. A crab wouldn't be doing that kind of damage anyways, there is no way it would expose itself on the top of the coral to snack on polyps at the ends of the branches when it can remain hidden inside the coral and do its damage there.

That damage is either light related or flow related, guaranteed. If you have moved the coral lower or out of direct flow you should see the tissue recession stop immediately and should regrow (or at least start to regrow) over the affected areas within a couple of weeks.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Appreciate it.

tang daddy 06-11-2010 01:37 AM

As many have said it may be alk burn, although are any other acros in the tank experiencing swelling at the tips? the flow may have an issue aswell, I would chop the burnt tips off and try all the things suggested... It should recover.

So if it is algae do I scrub it off? Because my other coral is fine.
