lastlight's 94 shallow wannabe
Well I bought this fixer-upper from Ryan (Muck) so I'm starting a new thread. No more waffling between various cube sizes now. This tank is 36x30x20.

The plan is to get creative and run a Herbie on this tank. I'm going to reduce the 1.5" to 1" to free up some space in that overflow. Then I'm going to drill a 1" hole thru the back of the tank and toss a 90 on it pointing up to act as my emergency drain.
I don't have the tank in my hands so there might not be room to do this but I'm going to try very hard to make it work and avoid redoing that overflow. The back will be scraped and I will be painting it and 1 side black. Overflow will be covered with live rock. |
Sweet! I think that will be killer and a very doable overflow. Pretty much just as you described. Nice and svelte! I like it!
|
Equipment I have:
tank (36x30x20) ro/di ranco controller eheim 1250 return Plan to buy: 2 x LumenMax Elite mogul 1 x BlueWave 7 dual 250w HQI ballast 2 x Radium 20k bulbs 1 x Bubble Magus 250 Pro 2 x 100w Ebo heaters 2 x MP20 |
Sweet!
What about using the patented sphelps style Herbie-in-a-single-hole Herbie? Might be easier than shoehorning a second hole. |

Well I like the new select-a-watt ballasts as well.
I know for sure I want to run the radiums to spec...which means I need an hqi ballast. for $100 more I can buy 2 of those ballasts and have flexibility down the road. Plenty of time to decide. All the equipment will be on the other side of the wall as well. Noise matters not! |
or you use the line in the over flow as the return, build an external box for the overflow, not sure how cutting glass would work if it was already assembled however. Awsome dimension's and nice grab however.
|
Yeah I don't mind coming over the top with the return. I think adding the 1" hole thru the back will be easy and the overflow is there to add some support under the drill location. I just know I won't be doing it =)
|
Oooh, shun burn. Fine, be that way :p I'd still try the single hole Herbie first (could it really hurt? If it doesn't work then you can drill the tank.) :p
|
Ok I have no idea how I missed your post Tony.
Yes I recall that idea and I will try it FIRST before I try and have another hole drilled. UNSHUN! |
thats a sweet little cube gona have fun with that!!!!
|
Actually it is a rectangular prism, not a cube.
|
ok ok easy now
|
I am making it a personal mission of mine to call out all those supposed "cube" tanks. Imposters!!:lol:
|
Holly crap, that was fast!!!! I just saw that tank posted last night.
|
Yay, a new home for your chaeto balls.
I like the dimensions on your upcoming tank, similar to the one I have planned. But yours is 4 inches shorter than mine. |

I lost 4" at circumcision, at least that's what I tell the wife , I'll probably get banned for that comment
|
I fail to see how commenting about sailing around the world could get you banned. You need to post pictures from an adventure like that. It's been a dream of mine my whole life to do a global circumcision in a sailboat.
|
My whole life!
|
LMAO!
This is why I love NEW threads. We can derail in entirely NEW ways. WElcome aboard folks. Those with any girth at all and those with none =) |
I'd post a picture of this so called coming out celebration, but I can't seem to get it to enlarge, I guess it wasn't meant to be.
Good to Laugh - A ! |
:ban:
|
shallow wannabe eh?
Look forward to seeing what you can do with that tank. |

jeez brett you and doug should just make one big thread either labeled "disguised sexual humour" or just straight up "sexins"
|

Looking forward to this build judging by your previous one even if your keeping this lower budget it should be fun to watch! |

Gonna be a cool tank Brett.....how longs it gonna take this one to get wet??? |
Soon as things calm down/stabilize in my life here I'll be framing the basement Doug so should be a pretty fast build. The cost this time is around 2k for the whole shebang I'd say so hopefully water in a few month's time!
