Well who are you and if I send you money how do I know that your going to send me some 250w bulbs? I don't feel that this request is unreasonable as it's your 1st post here.

Aquattro 09-15-2003 08:05 PM

Jon, you are correct. This does not seem to be a vendor or anyone we know. This person is also posting from a yahoo account. Hmmmm.......

Chad 09-15-2003 08:05 PM

wayner 09-15-2003 09:12 PM

I presume the 400W bulbs would run on the BLUE Line E-Ballast?, I'm not at home but if I remember correctly, I think the only 400W bulb they don't recommend is the 12K Sunburst.

How about first time around, you send me the bulb, then I send you the money.

venkiw 09-15-2003 09:18 PM

They have been tested on TAR and HQI ballast and they work fine. I am not sure about this ballast. Give me the ANSI code for the ballast and I'll clarify.

Canadian Man 09-15-2003 09:22 PM

Venki,
I think I would like 2 of the 250watter's. I'm assuming these one are with out the glass pieces in the bulb?

I am not set up on paypal so how will you accept payment?

cheers

venkiw 09-15-2003 09:24 PM

Hi Jonathan,

Yes these are the ones without the shards in them. Hence the price difference.

Payment methods:

local pickup (I prefer that, no anxieties...)
Paypal (to confirmed address)
Personal Checks (10 days to clear)
Bank Transfers
Wire
Money Order

Thanks

400W 10K

Well, according to the info on Champion's Website, this ballast should run the bulb, no problem.

BlueLine E-Ballast
Electronic Metal Halide Ballasts

What is an E-Ballast?
An E-Ballast is an electronic metal halide ballast that is available in 175, 250, and 400 watts. The E-Ballast is water resistant and completely sealed in an epoxy filled metal casing .

Why are we so ecstatic about these ballasts?
These ballasts have immediately fired up every mogul base bulb we could get our hands on. There is no flicker and no hum. All around, we did everything we could to get them to fail, but just could not do it.

Who makes the E-Ballast?
The E-Ballast is made by BlueLine and is distributed solely by Champion Lighting & Supply.

What makes an E-Ballast better than a conventional core & coil ballast?
Simple! Since the E-Ballast is an electronic ballast, it uses up to 25% less electricity by burning the bulb more effectively. Core & Coil ballasts waste a lot of electricity by turning it into heat energy. This in turn wastes a lot of electricity and heats up the area where the ballast is placed. E-Ballasts are cool to the touch. The 400W E-Ballast does run slightly warmer, but no where near that of a Core & Coil ballast.

How does the E-Ballast compare to other electronic MH ballasts?
The E-Ballast does not hum and there is no bulb flicker. It will run all mogul base bulbs of that wattage and does not need to be "tuned" to drive a particular bulb. It is the most versatile electronic metal halide ballast available. You can run all lamps from all manufacturers: 4300K, 5500K, 65000K, 10,000K, 14,000K, 20,000K. It does not limit your ability to change lamps.

What is included with an E-Ballast?
The E-Ballast comes with a three prong grounded plug and a 12ft harness with three coaxial disconnects.

What is the warranty on the E-Ballast?
The E-Ballast is warranted for 18 months from the date of purchase. Since the ballast is not repairable (because it is in an epoxy filled case), any defective ballast will be replaced with a new ballast.

What bulbs will the E-Ballast run?
Each ballast will run all mogul base or double ended HQI bulbs of that wattage that are currently on the market. You do not have to have these ballasts tuned to run a specific bulb. That means if you purchase a 250W E-Ballast, you can run any 250W mogul base or double ended HQI bulb on that ballast.
NOTE: We will not warranty any E-Ballast used with 12,000K Sunburst lamps. We don't not sell or recommend this lamp. We have tested this lamp and find it unstable. It will not light on a 400w or 250w E-Ballast. Our test have also shown this bulb to explode on a 175w E-Ballast. We have also had several customer complaints about this bulb.

I am planning to purchase a MH retrofit or hood, can I upgrade my system to an E-Ballast?
Yes, you can upgrade any CSL MH/actinic or MH/PC retrofit or hood we sell with an E-Ballast for an additional fee. Pricing for upgrades is posted next to the ballast pricing. To order a system, order your hood or retro, order your E-Ballast upgrade and then order your bulb upgrade.

I already have an existing MH ballast, what do I need to upgrade my existing system to an E-Ballast?
The E-Ballast can be easily installed to any existing system by cutting off the cord to the socket of the existing system and splicing it to the harness on the E-Ballast. You must purchase an E-Ballast at regular price to do this. The upgrade price is not for upgrading a system you already have.

Are the E-Ballast dimmable?
No, currently, there is no technology to properly dim a MH bulb without dramatically affecting the bulb life.

Is there a 220V E-Ballast?
No, the E-Ballast will run only run on 120V.

Wiring Diagram For E-Ballast

Canadian Man 09-15-2003 09:32 PM

Did some quick research and it looks like you get these from China?

Anyway obviously pickup is not an option as it may take me a few hour's to drive there

Anyway check work's for me as well as bank transfer.

How much would shipping be to Calgary AB, for 2 of the 250w's packed very well. Like stupid good packing.

venkiw 09-15-2003 09:34 PM

Wayner,

I can recommed these bulbs to work fine with the ballast.

I'll be introducing a ballast similar to the one you posted for under CAD$100 in the near future.

Cheers

Venki

venkiw 09-15-2003 09:38 PM

For anyone who is interested:

I can ship upto 2 bulbs anywhere in Western Canada for 15$ by express post.

Venki Worathur

wayner 09-15-2003 09:39 PM

Well, if you do, I would surely be interested in another, I've had no issues with this ballast, fire first time, every time, small footprint, & cool to touch.

Quinn 09-15-2003 09:44 PM

How long will you be selling these bulbs at these prices? I am interested in two 400w bulbs, but I don't need them for about a month or two.

smokinreefer 09-16-2003 12:28 AM

well i was gonna wait a year or so before i dumped my iwasakis for 10ks, but at these prices i might bite, just to try them out.

so whats it gonna cost me with shipping for 2 400Watters, to burnaby, BC?

and are these gonna be shipped insured? how long for shipping?

thanks.

Whatever happended to trust?

Your link to aquariumpros has the price listed for $20.00 and you are charging us $42.00 and $ 45.00 ... is it the same bulb ?

Cheers

venkiw 09-16-2003 01:27 AM

We do excellent packing on our side but, no courier will insure the glass bulbs for us. So we are not able to offer insurance at this time.

smokinreefer 09-16-2003 01:30 AM

can you describe excellent packing?
have you shipped to the west coast yet?
have you had anyone recieve broken bulbs?
thanks.

rasta, i saw that too, but the cheap ones had cosmetic damage, glass shards inside the bulb, whereas these do not.

venkiw 09-16-2003 01:32 AM

If you read the posting, you'll see that those bulbs have slight damage and are sold as is for 20$.

I do not have those bulbs anymore, but for a few reserved for aquariumpros.ca and aquaria.ca members.

This listing is for the bulbs similar to the ones sold on ebay. There are bulbs with no damage.

venkiw 09-16-2003 01:41 AM

No damage so far on bulbs shipped within Canada, we have had a case of broken bulb reported from the US so far ( and we found out that Canada Post will not cover it), hence we are not offering insurance anymore.

The package was literally put at the bottom of all items and totally flatenned out by Canada Post even though marked as Fragile. But their liability does not include glass - some smart people out there.

Buccaneer 09-16-2003 01:53 AM

Does FedEx or UPS not offer insurance ? ... I ordered bulbs from the US once and got one replaced by UPS due to damage ... unless it has changed as that was a little while ago ?

Cheers

venkiw 09-16-2003 01:56 AM

If it was declared as a bulb in the Customs Declaration form, there is no way they would have refunded.

Furthermore, more and more people are moving away from insured shipping for fragile items on ebay.

Quinn 09-16-2003 01:58 AM

Fedex broke one of my Ushio's on the way up from Washington DC and wouldn't cover it.

How long will these prices remain in effect? I don't need bulbs for another two months or so.

venkiw 09-16-2003 02:09 AM

not that long for sure ..

But you'll find them in your LFS by then.

Buccaneer 09-16-2003 04:07 AM

So are you saying that FedEx and UPS do not insure the packages ? ... I did a quick check on the UPS website and they say they automatically cover up to $100.00CDN/ pkg but will phone them in the morning to be sure that it extends to bulbs.

Cheers

Quinn 09-16-2003 04:17 AM

Steve I bet you one of those 400w bulbs that it doesn't.

Even Canada Post had automatic coverage of 100$, it is stated however that the liability does not include fragile and perishable goods.

If UPS or Fedex accepts (for ground service) to insure glass items please get that in writing from them and fax it over to me. I'll send you a free bulb.

Cheers

Andy 09-16-2003 11:05 AM

I just received 3 of the 400 watt bulbs yesterday. Everything came intact. Arrived 3 days after order placed. Haven't fired them up yet on the HQI ballasts. Will report back.

Andy

nbreau 09-16-2003 11:19 AM

Can anybody suggest what ballasts I could use with these bulbs ? Looking for something as affordable as possible....

Nick.

I checked with UPS this morning and they dont cover glass

Guess times have changed ... they must have gotten fed up replacing breakables ... too bad I dont get a free bulb  ... but I might be interested in buying a couple though

Cheers

Andy 09-17-2003 03:08 AM

Just wanted to let everyone know that I fired up the 3 400 watt 10 000 kelvin MH bulbs I received yesterday from Venki on my new retrofit driven by 3 son agro 430 watt HPS ballasts. The bulbs fired up right away and were extremely white in colour. I guess the important question is how long the bulbs will last being overdriven by the HQI-type ballasts. Man are they ever bright. I'm currently running 6 VHOs over my 280 gallon reef. Can't imagine what it's gonna look like when I get the MH/VHO retrofit installed.

Andy

wayner 09-17-2003 06:45 PM

Thanks Andy, I've ordered and am awaiting., can' beat the price, and I can't wait to see what else he'll have to offer in the future.

Canadian Man 09-18-2003 03:44 PM

Put in an order my self as well.
Check is in the mail

beaker020 09-24-2003 07:33 PM

Anyone else with feedback on these lights? I'm sitting on the fence right now.

I am currently running 250W iwasaki's on m58/h37 combo ballasts and I'm unhappy with the yellow colour. I wasn't going to replace these bulbs till this time next year (bulbs are 2 months old) but this price seems too good to pass up.
